I had a fire HELP! pics
Well I had a little fire yesterday. It appears that I had some oil in my drivers side H/E and it caught on fire burnt through the flex hose to the flapper box and ignited the interior through the old eye bolt holes. I got the fire out now I'm wondering how this is all going to play out with the insurance company. I looked under the car and the wireing harness is burnt through (the car was trying to start by itself before I got the battery unhooked) and one of the brake lines is gone and some heat damage. Any advice? the Insurance appraiser is coming out tomorrow. No real damage to the exterior but. My questions 1. if it gets fixed will the smell go away? 2. what will this do to the resale value of my car? 3. will the car be totaled?
I know I rambled on but I have many questions and want to be prepared to do battle with the insurance company. thanks Dean ![]() ![]() |

Why don't you ask the adjuster how many fire claims he has handled that dealt with Porsches. Just so you will know his level of experience.
Then tell him you have no experience in determining what it takes to restore you car so you are going to get in contact with the repair and restoration people who can tell you what it will cost and what it will involve. Tell him as soon as you have all the relevant information you will provide it to him so he can process your claim. In order words make him use your documentation from your people to process your claim. I would completely ignore any evaluation he or she might offer and simply present my claim as outlined above. |

I actually have all of my receipts from the restoration in pdf format and can email them to anyone. I am putting together a file right now. That is excellent advice and I need to be proactive.

Dean,
I don't know who your insurance is with but I wouldn't worry too much until you get bad news. Just ask the adjuster to let you take it to a reputable shop that works on Porsches. Some companies guarantee repairs if they are done in one of their "preferred" shops. You may find that it will go very smoothly.

Who told you it was caused by oil on the Heat exchangers? More than likely this is not how it started. The ignition temperature of oil is much hotter than your heat exchangers should ever be. My educated guess would be a fuel leak, or electrical caused.
What's the year of your car? To answer your questions: 1. The smoke smell should go away. I say should because it depends on the quality of job done by the repair facility. 2. I would say 10-15 loss to resale value. To minimize this, make sure to document the whole repair job with pictures so that you can show it was done right. 3. Depends, I can't tell without seeing more pics and knowing what year it is. |

Makio Thanks for the input! the car 1s a 1966. I really dont know how the fire started but it could have been electrical and I do agree about the oil theory not being the case. Anyway I guess I will just see what happens. Here is another picture Enjoy!
