'76 Euro Carrera 3.0 Targas identified in the US
A couple of years ago I contacted Hagerty Ins and inquired about the number of '76 Euro Carrera 3.0 Targas in the country. Mr. Glen Arlt, historian, got back to me. According to the email I received (1-17-20) the data is presented.
"The Porsche 911 Red Book identifies the chassis number range 9116610001 through 9116610479 as the identification number for these vehicles. The registration/title, transaction and insured database was searched. From there 45 of the 479 cars produced were identified. The following is a high-level breakdown." Chassis no. 91166100xx = 07 identified Chassis no. 91166101xx = 10 identified Chassis no. 91166102xx = 10 identified Chassis no. 91166103xx = 11 identified Chassis no. 91166104xx = 07 identified Glen goes on to say that "it is possible that more cars may exist under dealer/commercial registrations or private unrecorded collections". But given the accuracy of their search it is quite possible that this breakdown is a close representation of the number of '76 Euro Carrera 3.0 Targas in the country. My Carrera falls into the first 100 produced. Here's a little history of the car, just for the fun of it. If you like stories then you'll like this one. This Carrera left Germany for South Africa. There it spent about 10 years, and then the owner had it transported to Los Angeles in 1987 to sell on consignment. I found the car in the LA Times classified while hanging out at Norris Racing Cams in San Clemente one Saturday morning. Bruce and I drove up to Calabasas and saw the car at a Porsche service shop called Prestige Auto Service. The shop was closed but we squeezed through the gate and under the roll-up door and entered into the shop. We met a technician, showed him the add, and I gave him a check. I mentioned that I'll be back on Monday to pick it up. That's when I met the owner of the shop, Mr. Jack Pfluegler, whose German accent was quite pronounced. He told me that the car was spoken for and couldn't sell it to me, as he held my check in his hand. I asked him who wanted it and he said Mr. Ottis Chandler. Back then I didn't read the LA Times much but I found out fast that Mr. Chandler was the owner and editor in chief of the paper. He had a 911 collection that rivaled Seinfeld's, and he raced them too. In the log run I owned this car for 35 years and have never seen another one. In the 31-years that I've been a member of PCA, I have never seen a article in the Panorama showing this model. Frankly, I don't think Mr. Rob Sass has seen one either. So, if you have one of these 3.0's keep it, and lets see it. Here's mine. Harry '72 914 sold '77 911S sold '76 Euro Carrera 3.0 Targa, kept ![]() |

I currently own a German delivered ‘77 C3.0 Targa in Oak Green Metallic over Blackwatch Tartan in West Tennessee. I know of a Platinum Metallic Carrera 3.0 Coupe in Huntsville, AL and a White C3.0 Coupe also in North Alabama that was sent to Ruf to be converted to SCR spec! Air Cooled Classics in Knoxville, TN recently had a silver C3.0 coupe come through the shop for a rebuild.
Those are the handful of cars I’ve seen in the South East. I personally believe there were probably around 100 Coupe/Targa (‘76-‘77) that were imported in the Gray Market era. Many of these cars unfortunately had their engines removed because of the highly sought after engine case. In 8 years of my ownership and market research I’ve probably seen 5 or more for sale without the numbers matching motor and numerous stories of people selling or hoarding the engines. A few years ago my father drove to and attended the Euro Auto Festival in Greer, SC. Keith Martin of Sports Car Market Magazine and “What’s My Car Worth” on Velocity Channel was the guest speaker and MC for 2 years. He tracked my father down and interviewed him about the car during the show. Last edited by 77Targa0912; 08-02-2022 at 08:30 PM.. |

@mikedsliva on here exported one from the USA to Australia and rebuilt the original engine from pieces - that’s the engine in the popular thread on exhausts and dyno results.. If he reads this he might know what the chassis was - he has sold it now. Don’t recall if it was a 76 or 77. It was guards red coupe, though it might have been born a different color.

How's this - ?
Belonged to a founding member of Jersey Shore Region - Pete Arnold. Purchased new from Precision Porsche Audi, Eatontown, NJ. And because Pete had his left leg smashed in a racing incident, he ordered it with a Sporto, in Sahara Beige. The picture shows him at the Glen giving one of his students a reconnaissance lap. Quote:
the 2 RoW Carrera version for '76 & 77 were the 2.7 w/ 911/83 2010hp and the 3.0 w/ 930/02 200hp any '76 or '77 Carrera 3.0 that are here were privately imported There was no US version Carrera for '76 or '77, The last us Carrera was a '75 w/ a 911/43 175hp 2.7 My guess is that the yellow Carrera shown here is a US,'74, 2.7, 174hp the drivers side only mirror, chrome targa bar and antenna location are clues

Hey Bill, thanks for the input.
I thought that if I satisfied two (Targa+Carrera) of the three parameters, you guys would let me slide. I was wrong.

Chrome fogs and 6&7 wheels are another. 75 Carrera tail and front spoiler throws it off.
