glove compartment door

How do you remove the door? I want to take it off to reglue the backing that is separating from the front surface of the door. Do they sell new ones? I didn't see any on Pelican

You will need to remove the knee pads to gain access to the bolt on the hinges of the glove box door.

Take care the bolts tend to be pretty tight and can easily strip the head round. Ask me how I know.

I have an extra one if you want it cheap plus shipping.

Also if its spreading I fix mine with some adhesive and used wood clamps to dry over night, worked well, just make sure you place a piece of wood to spread out the pressure, if not the clamps will dent the padding.

ok thanks. So when you open the glove compartment and look inside -those screws in there are not holding it in? Is the knee pad hard to remove?

Knee pads are very easy, just reach behind the pads and you should feel 4 small bolts that hold the pad in place.

Once pads are removed and you open the glove box, it will open about 180 degrees then you will see the bolts that hold the glove box. If I had to do it again I would tap the bolts to break them loose before putting a socket on them to remove it.

I did this repair recently, without removing the glovebox door or the kneepads. Since the cover was already separating from the door, I removed it completely by removing the lock/latch mechanism and pulling the cover off. I cleaned the metal door, applied contact cement on the door and cover, pressed them back together and held them together for 24 hours with some 1"X2" wood and carpenter's clamps.

Works like a charm, easy as cake and looks great.

Well, now that YOU admitted it, I guess I might as well admit it too.

Yup, contact cement. Get the good stuff, don't get the cheap crap.

+1--I re-glued my door while in place. And depending on the amount of separation, it may not even be necessary to remove the cover completely from the door. I re-glued mine in stages--one side, then the next, etc. Turned out fine. I used the Wurth Black Weather Strip Adhesive I already had. It has the advantage of matching my black interior so you can't see any contact cement residue (usually a lighter color) at the edges.

Funny stuff, Bob. What a PITA. I can't believe that thing weighs so much.

I had a head start, but I just went out and pulled mine in about two minutes (79 SC).
My kneepads were already out of the way. The two phillips head screws facing out from the box were pretty stripped from someone's prior attempt to remove this, but I found that if I used a screwdriver to hold the screws in place and used a socket wrench to actually turn the nuts on the back it worked fine, they came out very easily. This might be because someone already had them off in the past, not sure.

ha ha- I figured for you experts it was too basic of a "repair" to warrant pics. I did use Goop brand contact cement FWIW!

Any updates on glue? You know, a brand that is still working or one that is no longer working. I used liquid nails and was not happy at how long it (didn’t) last.
Brock
P.S. it gets hot here in the summer so that could have had something to do with it.
