Tranny lube for G50- which to use?

I'm guessing this has been discussed here before, but anyway... I am confused about which lubricant is right for the G50 transmission. I know Pelican sells the Swepco 201, but in Wayne's 101 projects book, it clearly says the Swepco is more suited for earlier transmisisons while the G50 transmission would be better served by the synthetics. What synthetic and what weight?

Mobil 1, I recently switched and noticed a big difference. Especially during cold weather.

Sorry forgot I used 75w-90. The only problem I had was finding it. Finally found it in an Auto Zone.

Troy,

By the way if you have a Limited Slip, no additive is necessary. Mine worked fine.

Thanks Bob, ok second question- assuming you changed it yourself- what did you use to get the fluid in the trans considering the fill plug is on the side of the housing and the car must be level to check the fluid level?

M1 Gear Lubricant (NOT ATF fluid!).

Use a gear oil pump to introduce the oil into the fill hole. Fill until it starts leaking out. Before you drain, make sure you can open the fill plug first.

Mobil 1 tranny fluid, at my local Autozone they had a fitting that screws onto the top of the tranny fluid bottles with a short piece of hose and a valve. It was a couple of bucks and did the job perfectly.

Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil seems to be the way to go.

I went from Swepco to Mobil 1 and there was a noticeable improvement in noise and feel.

Don's gear oil pump recommendation is my choice too. I got mine at Sears Hardware for like $5 or $6 I think. It's a decent pump for the $. Pumps quite quickly too. Much better than a suction gun (what a mess). Here's a picture. It's made by CRC/Sta-Lube.

It screws onto the top of a standard gallon container. I use an old milk or water gallon jug. Go to the hardware store and get an extra length of clear vinyl hose and then you don't have to pump while under the car. The gallon jug is good to use because you can dump all three quarts in there at once.

And yes, definitely make sure you can get the fill plug loose before you drain it. Don gets the thumbs-up for remembering this. My drain plug was an absolute mutha to get loose. Almost broke my elbow hitting it on the trans. case. Get a 10mm hex key and slide a short length of pipe on there to get more leverage. Like a dummy, I did not use the cheater pipe and used all my skinny might to break it loose. Man, did that hurt...............

Thanks Bob, Don, Steve and Kevin. This board never ceases to amaze me, everyone is always eager to share information and no one has ridiculed me yet for asking such novice questions. You all make owning a 911 that much more enjoyable.

Ditto for Red Line, 75W-90, I use the regular gear oil not the NS (non-slip) version. NS is slightly more abrasive.

Careful...check the Redline products...most are rated GL-4 service, not the required GL-5, although some are. Check !!
