Balance Point G50 Transmission

Trying to separate the transmission from the engine on my '88 and would like to know if anyone knows the approximate balance point. I'm doing this alone so don't want to have it tip one way or another too hard. I did a search but was surprised that I could not find this question answered. Maybe didn't search right. I have pulled the clutch fork shaft out already. Bolts are loose and it will separate but worried about controlling it when it's fully separated. TIA

You didn’t find it because it’s a non issue, you’re overthinking just pull it apart.

My thoughts. It’s only 150#. though most people like to jack it from the rib on the bottom. I also recommend draining it prior to separation as it will be easier while it’s still suspended.

Not an unreasonable worry. I can't tell you an exact location of its CoG. The weight is more or less evenly distributed throughout the transmission, with a little less weight at the differential / clutch end.

You might consider renting / borrowing / stealing a transmission jack especially if you're working solo. It's certainly a good idea not to drop the transmission off a regular floor jack, especially on your face. There are a lot of people who buy a transmission jack, use it once, then after watching it accumulate dust for years put it up on Craigslist.

I second the transmission jack. I've used this cheepo for years with blown transfer cases in my Land Rovers.

It's not a life long tool. Ive used it for other odds and ends. Has a about a dozen uses in it, but for the cost definitely a life saver.. literally.

Why would you drop it in your face? I’m assuming he’s already removed them as a pair and was working on the floor.

Matt is correct, I already have the engine and tranny out as a unit. I was able to separate them without issue. Its a bit heavy but not too bad. I just let it rest on heavy section on the bottom that is perpendicular to the transmission, if that makes sense. It's not the "balance point" but its close enough. The most important thing is that once it's free it needs to be resting on something that does not allow it to roll off. I used my ATV jack with some 2X4s. Now to find out why there is a massive amount of oil inside the bell housing...assuming its the RMS. The pressure plate seems reluctant to come loose. I suspect it'll need some persuading with a rubber mallet.
