here’s one! electric windows

began yesterday.. parking my ‘85 911 …. i WAS ALWAYS able to “roll” up my windows with the key in the off position …UNTIL a door is opened.
Once a door is opened I needed to turn the key on to put up the windows. NOW with key off and PRIOR to a door being opened the window switch will not roll up the windows.
what could have happened?

Relay went bad?
Door (light) contact switch stuck or dirty ?

Had that occur once or twice on a Ford or BMW. Think I disconnected the battery and it reset the ECU.

The ECU on the 911 has nothing whatsoever to do with the windows.

Will the passenger side move up and down? If so, it is not the fuse.

Likely the switch itself, they are not robust at all and can and will fail.

i will try to make my issue easier to understand
This is how my window always worked BEFORE my issue:
i could turn off the car off, key off, the windows would still work UNTIL i opened a door.
NOW:
when i turn off the car the windows do not work PRIOR to opening a door.

the windows work! but not with the key off, unlike before

That sounds like the way a late model car works.. not an 80's 911... I really didn't think they were equipped with that feature.

Does your car have an aftermarket immobiliser?

Don't know about an '85, but I just checked on my '88 and I get the exact opposite of what you describe. Key in the off position or removed from ignition lock, I can roll up or down if I open driver door (didn't try with the passenger door). With the door shut (and me inside), windows cannot be operated unless I switch ignition back on.

immobiliser?

don’t know what that is. regardless, it was working but stopped. was nice to be able to turn off the car and close windows without having to turn the ignition on again... especially when my passenger forgets to close the window prior to getting out.

Exactly.

Edit: 85 and 88 work differently, as I discovered by reading this old topic and this one.
