cut red wire out of tail light wire harness

I bought a BaT car, 1984 911 Targa that has a few wires that lead to nowhere.

Tail light wire on each side has a red wire coming out of it that is just cut off. Any ideas what these wires were for? Could this be some old alarm system wire?

Just tape them off and leave them be?

thanks

Before you clip decide if you want to run a third brake light. If they connect to the brake light you can connect into that. Test it with meter with brake press, ignition on and see what happens. I just put a third brake light in a 1984 targa.

Thanks for that idea.

This car already has a 3rd brake light so I dont need to tie into anything.

I guess I need to get out the volt meter and see what that wire is connected to.

Oh boy.

I took off the red wire and unearthed this mess.

I've seen hack jobs in my day, but this is unbelievable

All of the wires in this harness are nicked and they they were covered in electrical tape. The harness must have come lose and rubbed against something like the air conditioner pulley, or maybe there was a nasty short somewhere.

The attachment of the red wire is just plaid bad.

So its time to fix this. I assume the other side is just as bad.

I guess its time to cut all the wires, solder or crimp them and cover with a good heat shrink tubing.

Any recommendations on the best way to fix this?

Time to order a bunch of stuff I guess.

You’ll get plenty of opinions. Soldering isn’t ideal in high vibration applications.

I’d crimp and shrink-tubing these using a Crimp similar to a bmw part like this.
BMW-61138353746, also available in larger sizes by swapping the last 6 for a 7 or 8

I’ve bought them from FCP euro.

Either use duraseal solderless connectors or "Parallel Connectors" and "Raychem SCL" shrink tubing for a lasting repair.

Soldering is inferior to crimping.

Fixed the mess.

Threw an old sheet over the engine to catch all the small pieces of cut wire. Cut all the wires, striped them, crimped on a bullet connector, then heat shrink each one, and then a large heat shrink in the entire bundle

The other side only had 1 wire that had to be repaired.

Much better than before

Well, I think it is anyway.
