Durant mirror glass replacement -- anyone use convex?
Replacing my desilvered Durant driver's mirror -- anyone use convex glass on the driver's side to improve the vision? The view from the 5" Durant with flat glass is almost useless.

I installed a convex in my 1970 911, way better than stock 5 inch.

where are you guys sourcing replacement glass? I called a bunch of places near me (sf bay area) and none were interested in cutting only a single piece.

I used this and just removed the mirror, have to be careful, I broke the first one on attempt. It is glued in with 2 globs of RTV silicone.

Back in business. I used this convex one:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00029WSZE The whole job was fairly delicate to pull off TBH, including reducing the diameter odf the mirror about 1mm all around to fit properly in the black bezel. I do not want to go back in there and do that again anytime soon. On the plus side, the mirror is now adjustable again. @Lz7w let me know if you want to see it in person sometime.

There may be trick to easily remove the plastic retaining ring to access the Durant glass. I found it difficult. The ring was easier to remove if the glass was already damaged.
One option is to install a small 2" convex mirrors on top of the existing mirror. Quick update:
The mirror went from useless to very useful. The slight fishey on the convex takes a little mental adjustment, but the visibility is about 4X better. |

I think breaking out the old glass first was key for me getting the black ring out. Then you can get a grip on the far side of the black ring without marring the steel or plastic. I may have heated it a bit in hit water or heat gun. It was definitely tricky to get out as I recall.
