Getting Bored, Need Some Advice

Well, it is happening again. I have reached that point where I get bored with the 911, contemplate selling it, sell it, regret it and then wait 5 years to take the plunge again (done it twice already). So new wheels seem like a viable upgrade.

Options:

1. Refinish my existing 15" 7/8 Fuchs. Al Reed seems to be the overwhelming choice here. Curb rash, polishing, new paint needed. How much is this?

2. Called Wheel Enhancement about 16" 7/8 Fuchs, all they had were 6/7's for over $1200, no tires. Too much $$, not wide enough.

3. Cup Wheels? What will fit on an 85?

4. Boxster wheels, will these fit? These seem to be for sale everywhere, anyone bought and mounted? Pictures?

5. Saw a set of Ruf's fly out of here today pretty quickly. Those would have been perfect. Was that a bargain price ($1300 with tires?)

Pictures would be great, Photoshop as well

BTW, I tried posting a picture, keep getting a message that it already exists on the server, changed the name 3 times, and each time, I still get the same message.

Bug?

Great looking cab--have you tried a DE? That may help reinvigorate your enthusiasm. You will develop a new respect for your car and what it can do thats for sure--especially if you have an instructor drive your car to its potential while you ride along. Wow! The cups will fit your car with spacers and look great--the 17x7 and 17x9 with 215's up front and 255's in rear really look nice and don't require any body mods to fit. Kuhmo tires are inexpensive and are recommended for the cost concious buyer--you may find wheels with tires on them. Chip/exhaust upgrades are fun too. Tightening up your suspension will transform your car as well. Lots of ideas for you to consider--the question is what will your checkbook allow you to consider???

Put it away for a while. I've never driven a Porsche as a daily driver (I've had five) and have never gotten bored.

Zeke,

This is how sick I am. This is not my daily driver. That would be my 02 Tahoe--which I recently added some 20" chrome rims to keep me interested. I also travel about 40% of the year. So the P-car gets plenty of siesta time in the garage. I just live in a land of excess and am getting tired of seeing those all-so-sweet twin turbos et al.

Jon, any suggestions for the Cups? Also anyone care to tell what Al Reed charges to do the work I described above? Yes, I know that I could ask myself, just was hoping for a before/after picture and testimonial.

Also, someone told me that those are 944 wheels. Any way to tell that from the picture?

Do you belong to a club?

Do you get out and drive with mates who also own P-cars?

Do you totally wrench your own car?

Do you compete in any type of event?

I think these things would inspire your enthusiasm longer term than any cosmetic makeover.

Still, I like my wider wheels 17x9.5 & 17x7.5 - looks more modern too IMO.

Cheers
Mark

Mark,

Very nice. That is definitely a look that I am considering.

The answer to all of your questions are no. I have many hobbies that are a bit more physical, so this one does not get the attention it deserves. Are those the standard cup wheels? Did you have to use spacers? If so, which type?

Hopefully this will inspire you - as I think the polished fuchs look even better on dark (black) and Red cars.

Mine are 16 x 8 and 16 x 9's

Before

After

About $300 from the famous Mr. Al Reed. Add another $45 because he had to straighten one of the 8's (944 turbo pre 1986 offset)

I have no problem holding my head up against the twin turbos or 993's - in fact I get many who come over to me and tell me that they had a Carrera and they wish they'd never sold it.

xlr8 - Russ - sweet ride - what year? What size wheels? What color? very nice - I'm a sucker for cabs with meaty tires, wonder why?

I dont think cups come in .5" increments so I believe mine to be copies. Yes I use spacers which I had made up froma racer here in HK who does that sort of work. From memory the front spacers are 22mm and the rear are 27mm which I'm not too happy with (unsprung weight and all) but my **** wheels got pretty badly damaged when I had to drill out not less than six lug nuts that snapped.

Thing is, that when I was getting the fuch wheels off the workshop guy (tyre shop) said he thought he had an old set of wheels in his attic from a P-car. When he brought them down and we did a test fit I was thinking it looked ok. So then I asked a price. He said US$200 for the set including tyres....ahhh...ok I said....

So I'm happy enough given that I only drive it on w/e's. The picture I posted is not great but seriously, I have many non-porsche people ask what year it is thinking late nineties.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do but try to get more involved and I bet you'll stop thinking about a change in car. I too do physical recreation gym, bike and Taekwondo training but always find time to chill with the car. I actually started my own P-club and designed a website and gets lots of fun emails from people about all sorts of things Porsche, and have met some great people who also keep my interest alive.

Mark
