Back Up Camera on Early 911

Just thought I would throw this out there, is anyone running a backup camera on there early long hood. If so can you please share your suggestions and experience with the install and camera operation?

I haven't, but I think something like this might fit the bill, the display is in the rear view mirror.

A friend of mine installed a camera like the one above on his Volvo XC70, and likes it.

I've never felt a need for a backup camera on my 911 since visibility is so good.

I have used backup cameras as a full time rear view mirror. It can really help, especially with blind spots. I have used two, both through amazon. One lasted about two years (the problem ended up being the power cable). My complaint is that I had to touch the screen three times to get the rear cam, every time I drove. The replacement system is better but the screen is too dark. Good for rainy days and nights but not for bright daylight.

Another thing is that you need to mount the camera in the right orientation, as there was no easy set up to flip the camera view. I made a small bracket that mounts to the top of the license plate using the license plate holes and mounted the camera to that. Be careful when wiring as getting it anywhere near the muffler will result in a toasted wire. Since the camera lens is right at the front of the camera, water droplets can cover the lens and interfere with the view. You may need to put a small hood to block water running over the lens.

just wonder... why would you need back up camera on classic 911..?..if you are backing up and look over your shoulder(hand on the pass seat) you see almost everything..unless you have a sciatic nerve problem..;-)

Hahaha. Nope, no health issues. My car is a convertible and the plastic back window degrades with time and visibility is not the best, particularly in the rain. Also, the black rear quarters of the convertible make for a bit of a blind spot.

Of course, with the top down there are no rear visibility issues at all (unless it rains which is a separate problem. )

i hear ya there is a lot of cloth on the top...have you tried this for the plastic?

THere's also the stuff below your line of sight that you can't see until you hit it, like parking blocks, high curbs, low walls, and the like. Once, there was a light pole in a parking spot that I was backing into. I could clearly see the pole, so I thought, "No problem, I can see what I'm backing up to." However, that light pole was on an elevated concrete block about 1.5 ft high and 2 ft in diameter. Fortunately, I wasn't driving my 911 when I tapped it.

well ,i understand if you have a neck or other problems...but , you have to be aware of your surroundings if you are backing up into some space, don`t you look 1st ??

I've become a fan of the backup camera. Forced upon me by technology and necessity.
I have the one shown on the OP (Amazon), the picture is less than adequate. I've tried adjusting
the contrast and brightness on the screen. I'm thinking of installing a camera on my classic but will search for a better resolution screen.

I installed a CarPlay retrofit unit on my wife’s Cayenne. It came with wirings for a backup cam, and she always wanted one. A friend said go on Ali Express and get a OLED cam for $14. I laughed, but said ok.

Well.. it’s better than my friends 992 cam and the unit has overlays for Park sensors and working steering guide bars. I know that’s a function of the Canbus on a new car, but that Cam is awesome. Even fits in the licence plate mount.

If you are opposed to a backup camera on principle, don't use one. The rest of us have had experiences where a backup camera would have helped. And if you haven't yet, you will.

Peter it has nada to do with oppose the camera ,just to use common sense that is all i said .plus if you need one for health reason ..it is a good tool..

I'm not too proud to admit after having it for 7 years and daily driving it 4 years now, I still have no damn idea how far back the back of my SC coupe is. Door mirrors are merely there for decoration because they are totally useless.

Someone with lengthy arms can probably reach over the top and touch the bumpers in the convertible !

But surely, looking at where the car's going is preferable to staring the other opposite way and down at a small, granted ... an assumption on my part not knowing what big screen pop up LCDs folks have installed in their 911s, screen and possibly missing some details.
