What not to do when building an engine.
My customer bought an engine 3.6L built with RSR cams. It froze up 3000 miles later and he brought it to me to tell him what went wrong.

Looks similar to the "NEW REBUILT" engine I purchased from forum member couple months back.. Everyone claims to be engine builder these days... great picture showing what not to do. Crazy.

Where does the mindset of using silicone everywhere come from? Do people just naturally assume since they used silicone caulk on their shower that they should use it in other places for sealing?
Those rocker shafts make me want to puke. |
rebuilt engine
Seems to be going around.....here's some pix of the rockers on a 3.0 that was sent to me to figure out why it was making bad, banging noises......
The 1st pic shows the same use of silicone to seal the rockers.....will be a beeeyatch to get those out of there......also some sticks/sawdust stuck to the gasket......but the 2nd pic shows the winner....pistons installed rotated 180 degrees out. Yep same wonkiness going on with this 3.0. Besides loving red RTV and using lower allen bolts instead of studs I just uncovered this:

here some genius helped himself with a stretched chains...welded some extra on the arms to cover the space...oh ya the chain was rubbing on top a little..That was 911 imported from over the pond.....

Its these peeps think they can R&R rocker shaft seals with the engine in the car...and then they give up and stuff the rocker shaft recesses with silicone.....

I'll admit that I've rebuilt only two auto engines (one a 327 Chevy and the other my 2.7). Each was a very different animal. In both cases I did a ton of research and reading first to understand what to do (and more importantly what NOT to do). Lots of great info here and in many books related to proper sealing and assembly of 911 engines. There is no excuse for what is seen in those photos... |
As a former mechanic, and engine builder, looking at this I despair;:mad: and how much I wonder was the over-all cost of this experience ??? :confused:

Holy hell, when I saw the late model cams with the early big nut and washer with a bolt and spacer, I have to think that the guy never even bothered to look up the prices of the parts to do the job right. For about $30 he could have done it the right way.
