Hi guys first post and a few questions.

My 1967 911 has 73k from new

when I take the oil filler cap off there is a steady stream of smoke rising from the filler neck. It doesn't apear to be chuffing but I think increases with RPM.

Secondly there seems to be an oil leak within the engine bay from around the oil filter/filler neck. I replaced the oil filter last night and in the short test I gave didn't leak again, but I thoguht I'd mention it incase it was related.

There is some smoke from the exhaust which is white, and the car generally runs well and then will have periods of poor running. I usually cure this by cleaning the jets (idle ones mainly).

I thought I may have overfilled, but I really don't know how I'm supposed to check the oil level. Hot and on a level surface I know but do you put the dipstick all the way into it's holder when checking the oil?

Smoke coming from your filler neck that increases with RPM's sure sounds like blow by from the rings. But instead of just speculating why not just do a compression test?

Because I dont have a compression tester. I just hought I would get some opinion before hand as I'm a bit concerned.

Relax. It's a car. They're very reliable. do a compression check when you get a chance. Drive.

Ant, I hope I didn't come across as a smart asss. Didn't mean to be. You can get a decent compression tester for less than $40 at Sears. That will either buy you a lot of piece of mind or give you some idea of whether or not you may have a problem. In the mean time, like Supe said, drive. You are not going to break anything.

I know it's just a car but I love it

Cars are the only form of stress in my life and I do need to relax about it.

I'm going to pick up a compression tester at the weekend and I think they have leekdown testers as well.

Please do not be offended, but you said you didn't know how to
check the oil...you do know the engine has to be idling...and warm
don't you? I had a friend who when he bought his first used Porsche who didn't know the Porsche was a
dry sump engine and overfilled by a bunch because he was checking with the engine off.

yeah I know it has to be running.

It was the vagueness of the dipstick that really threw me. It can go so many ways down the filler neck and get so many different readings. Luckily I was doing it correctly.
