Worn spindle? Should I buy a new front strut
Hey all,
I am restoring my 911 sc's suspension and brakes and on of my front struts has a spindle with a somewhat big dent in it. Do I need to get a new one (or source a good secondhand one). See pics. ![]() |

Not sure what you’re talking about? Spindle wear or those two nicks? Those nicks wouldn’t bother me only a crack would, the bearing race will cover it. If you’re going to lose sleep over it spend the $750 and buy a new one. Just my opinion.

Looks like someone wasn’t careful with a chisel or punch at some point. Most people would probably leave that. Personally I’d polish the area, nicks can be stress risers.

I would use some fine sandpaper, 400 grit on top of a flat file and just knock the tops off those marks. In aircraft world this is called "remove high metal". The inner bearing races just need to be a close sliding fit on this surface. No need to replace spindle.

The surface on the far right is where the grease seal rides - it is pressed on and can be removed and replaced or just cleaned and polished as suggested. The wear on the spindle in the middle of the picture is where the inner race of the inside wheel bearing rides. Assuming the inner race doesn't spin easily on the spindle you should be ok. It should be a snug fit. I have seen spindles where a previous mechanic took a punch to this spindle bearing wear area to create high spots to keep the inner race from spinning on the spindle. I suspect this may not have been a Porsche recommended procedure.
