Porsche and F1

Newbie fan to Formula 1. I was watching Monaco last week and was wondering why Porsche was no longer involved. Whats the factory status on possible future F1 racing or is there no status at all.

No Porsche in F1. I think it is way too expensive for Porsche. Ferrari is only able to do it because they make a ton of money on their Ferrari F1 merchandise.

It looks like with the viable name of Porsche behind it they could get massive sponsorship. It sure would be fun watch them compete.

Porsche's re-entry to F1 would most likely be as an engine supplier . The CGT's V10 (if it can rev to 18.000+rpm) could be for sale . Personally I'd like to see them back in Sportscar racing with a factory team . There's a possible re-emergence of group C on the cards , but don't hold your breath .

There has been talk lately about Porsche getting back into F1, especially with the advent of their V-10 motor in the Carrera GT. I think it would be killer to see them get back in! But... I'm not holding my breath.

They did have a go a while back but not with much sucess.

I took this pic of Michele Alboreto's FA12 in my friends garage just last saturday.

BTW thats one of his 956's in the bottom corner of the pic. Yes i am so envious!

Plus porsche seems to be more fixated on turbo tech than insanely high reving, screaming, open wheeled beasts. Now i indy car where i believe the motors are turbocharged v8's if memory serves, that would be cool. Of coarse the CGT's motor is a possibility, it would need a displacement decrease as i know that ferrari's motor is a high reving 12 that's a 3.4 L. (i haven't updated my knowledge on the open wheeled sports in awhile so corrections are appreciated) But anyhow, you get the idea. Besides, i like watching cars that are basically street cars modified racing on the track (lemans GT class). F1 is cool just because of the insane tech that's used.

If the Cayenne is as big a success as they hope, it's sales would certainly create the capital needed to organize a factory racing effort.

methinks the chumps that run Porsche nowadays would much rather put Cayenne cash in their pockets than on the racetrack.

I wonder if that's the reason or if they are afraid to do anything that would hurt their winning image? Either way, I don't think the bean counters are going to let them "waste" any money on racing.

I'm ready for their return.

Althought not in F1, the Porsche Supercup races that preceed each F1 race are fun. Too bad they don't show them on Speedvision also.

I can only hope Porsche gets back into actual F1 competition. By the way did anyone see 'Swapping Paint' on Speed last night where Jeff Gordon drove Montoya's F1 car and Montoya drove his #24. Gordon did very good but raved over how powerful the F1 car was. An interesting observation made on the show was that F1 racing was a showcase for the car companies' engineering technology and the car itself has a bigger impact on the race outcome than with NASCAR.

Here are a few Porsche Supercup shots at Spa.

Entering Au Rouge

Leaving the Paddock

Exiting at the top of Au Rouge

Might want to check out Porsche's brand new FIA/F1 spec racetrack. Why build it, if they aren't going to use it somehow????

I agree that it would be great if Speed TV showed the Porsche Supercup races. Maybe we need another grass roots campaign...

OUT THERE

I think we are missing the point . We have forgotten that Porsche has been taken over by aliens and 'the managament' has been beamed off to Fiat 3.7 in a far off galaxy to steal the technology!
The CGT's V10 is in fact a de-tuned version of Ferrari's current F1 screamer and the Cayenne started life as a moon buggy!

I think that Ferrari can afford it because they've got the financial backing of the entire FIAT empire.

I'm hoping that Porsche will take a factory preppared CGT to Le Mans in the next few years. You never know..... there might be a surprise appearance on the grid tomorrow ????

I realise that that's the official line..... but of course they're going to say that. No pressure, no expectations... then a last minute surprise call up to duty once the car is re-worked and fully developed by the factory.

Even if the factory doesn't, privateers will !!

PORSCHE WILL RACE AGAIN .... !! When they do, I'll be there waving my Porsche flag.....
