Valve Timing Advice Sought

Took the engine apart to re-seal a few leaks. Motor ran great prior to taking it apart. Now that it is all together again I have a stumble at take off. At first I thought it may be related to the new shift fork and clutch adjustment but I'm leaning towards valve adjustments after a thorough search around the clutch area.

If I set the static valve timing off by a bit does it make sense that the engine would idle fine and the timing via timing light appear normal?

I have literally no power at the low end, I can hardly get going without stalling. However once I get sluggishly up to speed it smoothes out and runs fine.

Help Please...

Starting off, what did you change or adjust?

Just disassembled and reassembled engine to correct a few leaks. Only hardware changes were a new shift fork, throwout bearing and helper spring. That's why I originally thought it might be clutch related, but I can shift through all the gears and the car actually pulls better in reverse.

In re-thinking everything, which leads to second guessing everything I did, I was wondering if somehow I missed it on setting the initial cam timing. I am going to pull the upper covers tonight and re-check the cam timing.

The car idles ok and distributor timing seem ok, it just has an abnormally weak bottom end. It can hardly get started.

Thanks for any suggestions...

I think you know what to do...

I would start by just checking over the obvious stuff first...

1. Distributor timing
2. Spark connections
3. Proper fuel delivery (pressure, etc..)

Then maybe move to the more time consuming stuff like
4. Valve adjustments
5. Cam timing
6. etc...

Just to complete the saga. First of all thanks to the board and mostly Dad911. I went back and checked the shift coupler and sure enough both bushings were shattered. Evidently the reason it felt like I was taking off in 3rd gear was due to the fact that I was in 3rd gear. Hence no low end power. What an idiot, I was so frustated I was going to pull the motor again this weekend. Thanks to all...Especially Dad911
