71 911T ... Flasher relay always on!
Just acquired my brother's 1971 911T Targa that he bought new, and I was there when he took delivery all those years ago! My turn now to be the custodian. Happy!!
One little quirk, is that the flasher relay is ALWAYS on, audibly clicking away. In conjunction, and perhaps related, is that the BRAKE lamp in the instrument cluster is on most of the time, and that light flashes in time with the flasher... So, I suspect a previous attempt to resolve the fact that the brake light comes on most of the time, thinking the Ebrake is on, caused a wire swap somewhere, or broken ground? I have ordered the large format schematic from Vintage Wiring Diagrams which looks much easier to understand than the Clymer manuals etc. BUT, wanted to introduce myself and see if the knowledge base here can help! TIA Kevin in Oregon

Which light flashes? The big red one in the combo gauge? Or a smaller red one in the combo gauge? (The latter is if you have an oil temp gauge in the combo gauge.)
That one is the brake warning light. It is designed to flash in two circumstances: When the brake system loses pressure in one of its circuits, or when the handbrake handle is up. After you bleed the brakes it is usually necessary to press the reset button on the side of the master cylinder, where the wires plug into it. If not, you will get the brake warning light flashing at you from then on. The handbrake handle has a tab on the bottom that presses a button down near the floor. When that button is not pressed by the handle being down all the way, the light will flash. If the wire comes off the switch and grounds itself to the floorpan of the car, this makes the circuit "think" the handle is up, and the light also flashes.

You can also just pull the wire off the master cylinder to stop the ticking. No harm done, brake lights still work, you just won't have the warning light to tell you there's a brake pressure issue. You can probably sense any brake issue without a light.

Thank you both for the informative replies! My brother (PO) had his mechanic address the issue several times (apparently the emergency brake switch is the source of the issue) The brake warning light DOES go out now and again, but is on MOST of the time.
What does make me think that there are a pair of issues, is that you can hear the flasher relay EVEN WHEN the brake warning light is off .... Now that our temperatures are moderating, I'll try to remove the brake master cylinder wire and see if that stops the flasher. IF the light does NOT go out, I trust that confirms in the emergency brake switch. Thank you both, stay tuned! -Kevin |

Same issue on my 71 911t .I just unplugged the wire but want to figure it out ,it is the warning system for the dual circuit master that I have unplugged and I want to be confident that it is not an air bubble or something in the system.Subscribed.
