Engine ID ?

What's an easy way to tell which engine I have?

I just bought the car from someone who knew nothing about it. (much like myself ) Since it's a '77 I assumed it had a 2.7 but some of the things about it now that I'm working on make me question maybe someone in the past may have upgraded.

Thanks

Engine Serial Number will be very helpful... located vertically on the right hand side by the fan.

Get the engine number.....it will say 930/XX, it's a fainter one above the engine serial number. Both are next to the oil sender, bottom right while looking at the engine with the lid open.

if all you want to know if it's the 2.7l look at the passenger side of the case under the cylinders look for 7R at the end of the case casting number.

Hopefully it will say 930/xx. If it is a 2.7 it will say 911/xx.

Thanks guy's,

Here's what I found. The vertical #on the fan next to the oil sender is *62758821* Behind the sender on the flat surface is stamped 911785 and on the case on the left hand side just above the lower valve cover is 901.105.111.1R

What Engine? Thanks!!!

Hmmm seems to be a 1977 US 911S 2,7 engine. Type 911/85 I think.

Looks like the stock engine.

6= 6 cyl
2= engine type, in this case 911s (USA) (CDN)
7= 1977
8821= Sequential serial number

Quote:
911785
Should be 911/85, 165hp US 50-state CIS engine, which is the engine type for the listed serial number.
