Convert Heater Lever (at handbrake) to cold start lever - '83 SC
I am pondering various things in my EFI conversion.
I liked the old lever that helped with cold starts - simple and effective way to solve the problem of cold starts. It would also mean I don't need an idle air control valve and all the associated plumbing in the engine bay. Could I convert the lever I already have for the engine heater blower to a throttle adjusting cold start lever ? As always all inputs greatly welcomed, Douglas. |

I don’t know what the mechanics of the heater lever are but I built a throttle lever for my efi and while most of the parts can be found online at Pelican, google, and eBay, there were a few critical washers that I had to source externally at McMaster and one absolutely critical one that I couldn’t find at all that I had to fabricate.
If you can weld or can fabricate stuff it will be no problem at all… if you’re looking for a drop-in bolt on solution… I’d reconsider and maybe look at a IAC valve. I just did this a month or so ago on my ‘82. Almost all of the parts are readily available from our host or others.
A glaring exception is the slotted cylinder that goes on the throttle rod, which is critical. It was NLA. I advertised in the WTB classified for one and got one. That said it would be easily made by any machinist. It’s a slotted cylinder with a set screw to clamp it onto the throttle rod in the tunnel. I looked at IACV’s but decided the ECU I have might not support it.

I just did this to my ‘82 with PMO carbs. I bought a used parking brake assembly with the hand throttle lever and machined my own piece to clamp on the throttle rod. With the geometry of the SC throttle linkage and carbs, the hand throttle is Very sensitive.

You can adapt anything if you're determined enough. If I wanted to do that, I think I would try to connect the heater wire to the throttle bell crank on the transmission and see how that works.
