It''s A/C upgrade time ?

Well the hot days are coming and my stock A/C with York compressor is just about dead. I've been looking through old posts and was wondering which way to go ( move to Washington?) and what would be the most cost effective bang for my buck.
I've checked the Perfomance Aire site and was thinking maybe just a new compressor and one of those Krule? or Kruehl vent upgrades to try and get more air moving up higher.

Any thoughts, Thanks

Bob: I'm thinking about doing an upgrade too. *IF* I do it, I think I'm going to add the Performance Aire condenser. I'll do the installation myself, and then have them recharge and "tweak" the system. I already have the Kuehl vent, and it works great. Easy installation. If you're going to do the compressor, I'd "bite the bullet" and get a rotary compressor. Performance Aire will sell you all of the parts (except the Kuehl vent) for DIY, and then you can take the car down to Orange County and have them evacuate and recharge the system.

If you want to see my Kuehl vent, let me know and we'll figure out a place to meet.

Scott

this sounds like an AC-upgrade party/show-and-tell in the making. I've got to do something about my system...at least get it charged and see what happens. I've got a case of DuraCool R12 replacement, I just need to find a local place that can check the system and charge it. The vent and maybe new compressor are on a wait-and-see until the recharge experiment.

no, this is an R12 substitute. It tastes great *and* is less corrosive.

Does the Kuehl vent just replace the bowtie diffuser that's there? I noticed the orifice behind the bowtie (which I have removed) is very tiny. I can barely get my finger through it. This has to be holding air back.
Today on the open highway I was only getting about 60F at an ambient temp of 91. I have the upgraded comp. but I suspect the system is low on R12.
Keep us posted.
My next upgrade (when I get a job!) will be the underbelly cond.

Don't want to be the demon of the post, but get rid of the ac, save on gas, lighten the car. And then finally, for god sakes, roll down the windows, slouch in your seat with one hand on the wheel (about 12 o'clock), then go a little faster. Its the perfect free ac. LOL

If you do a search on the Kuehl vent or Bowtie you'll find pretty good instructions on how to fab up for cheap.
