Watkins Glen R-Gruppe Pics

A few pics from the weekend at the Watkins Glen historic races. A small turnout but we had a fantastic weekend. It's great to get together with guys who really KNOW Porsches!! Besides me, there was Jim Garfield (motor problem in the R-Gruppe car so had to drive the Montero ), Steve Turco (red 67S ST-look), James Shira (black 69 w/3.2), Don Ahern(spelling?) (he's got two real 73RS's and an original 68 rally car but was unable to bring them and drove his RS America), Dave Cardone (of recent wiring harness fire fame came in the ML320 support vehicle!!), and Dave's roomate Brian (original 72T 2.4 MFI). Ton's of early cars in the paddock. Big rain all day Saturday but perfect on Sunday.

Curt,

Great pictures! Glad you had a safe trip home, as we did. It was truly great to meet all of you. The small group was diverse enough to keep the conversation lively at all times. Jim Garfied even managed to keep my Jaime entertained with his profession of restoring historic homes and buildings. That is one of her favorite subjects, aside from old sports cars.

I must add that the photo of Steve and I was not staged. We had to fix a minor electrical problem- a dead tail light - in the hotel parking lot. With the help of Phil the intrepid hotel owner and Curt's cool old leather tool bag, everything was back in working order in mere minutes.

Each of the cars brought by the guys was great in its own way, but I fell in love with Steve's dark red 67 S (2.2S motor, Webers, flares, WIDE Fuchs with big fat tires, the whole nine yards... gorgeous).

We really have to organize a similar trip for the Zippo historics in September. If anyone wants to visit Pittsburgh for the Vintage Grand Prix in July, I'd love to work out some kind of a meet. (check out http://www.pittsburghvintagegrandprix.com/ it's a VSCCA event).

Sorry I had to take off without proper goodbyes. I had a great time this weekend and I followed Brian's 911 home with the windows open the whole way just to listen to that engine. Curt, thanks for putting it all together.

David

Dave, I had to actually dodge a couple of tornados on the way home!!!! One touched down about a 1/2 mile off the expressway 10 minutes before I stopped at the gas station - the cashier was white as a ghost and shaking!!! But the car ran flawlessly (450 miles each way). Looks like this will be the 1st of many bigger and better events. -- Curt

BTW: Dave is a certifiable car nut. What an interesting guy! Maybe he'll post a list of his project cars sometime - including the Volvo pacecar from the 64 Sebring 12 hour!!!

I think Jack Lewis in Atlanta takes care of that blue car? Pretty sure I saw it there 6 or so months ago, he mentioned he built it for a customer. Did not have those cool wheels though. I wonder what brand they are?

On the blue car, we were trying to figure out if it was an authentic race car from the 70's. Pretty much everything in the garage was. This was a 70 or 71 E. Very cool looking car. -- Curt

I sure wish I could have been there. Other obligations kept me from attending. It looks like a great event.

I am definitly planning on attending Pittsburgh and would like to go to the Zippo.

Hey Jason, thanks for the info. OUr little informal judging placed your car and the ivory S as the best early cars there! Didn't know about the history on yours though - interesting! And 2:16's??? Holy crap! -- Curt

Thought you guys might enjoy a pic of one of Don's 73RS's. Touring version, this car has a documented history with Kremer Racing:
