Engine Compartment Air Seal Putty - What is It?

I decided to go ahead and change the rubber air seal (and sponges) in my engine compartment before I reinstall my freshly rebuilt motor. When I started looking closely at the air seal I saw that there was some type of non-hardening putty that was used to seal the corners where the rubber seal ends come together. This putty seems important to restore a good air seal, but I can't find any mention of it anywhere. Can someone suggest a product? Thanks.

Your search term is "dum dum sealing putty." This is found in all sorts of cars, so specifying yours in this case is not absolutely necessary.

I assume that you are referring to the seal between engine tin and body. I have replaced that seal a couple of times on both the 70 and 88 and never used any putty. Didn't find any either. And yes it is a good idea to change it with the engine out. I never encountered any sponges either unless you are referring to the spongy sound pad.

There are black foam blocks wedged into the body just in front of the shock towers. They do tend to crumble and fall apart. See this thread: Hot engine bay-

There are two sponges that fit in the small gap between the rear shock mount upper support and the firewall. All sorts of cables and hoses go through this gap, and Porsche puts two sticky backed sponges in this gap around the hosts/wiring in order to seal the engine compartment and keep things from moving around I suppose. These are still available from Porsche (I have two on the way). The originals, after 37 years, were filled with oily grit, and they crumbled when touched. They are important for sealing that gap and keeping the exhaust heat exchanger heat out of the "cool" side of the engine. Sorry for TMI.
