Broke a cap, can someone identify?
During some work on my car I broke off some sort of cap in the trunk behind the gas spring. Shattered when I touched it, looks like some sort of wax/bakelite material.
I can't find it in any of the part catalogs. Does anyone know what it is, and what part nr. it has? It's a 1985 3.2 Carrera. ![]() ![]() |

It’s a block off for the tiny vent on passenger side.

I'm not sure I follow. You mean it blocks ventilation air intake? Could you elaborate, or if you know, post the part number so I can search it up myself?

On my 77 it’s a supply for this small interior dash vent for air to be directed at windows and where it connects to hvac distribution,,,
Not sure why yours was capped off. If not needed you can simply use a sized plumbing cap or if they have the size at the big box hardware store, a table leg floor protector. [ ![]() ![]() |

On my 1980 targa that vent feed thru from frunk to passenger footwell was capped off because the passenger side a/c vent air source was rerouted from a vent hole on passenger side footwell near the driver side footwell bow tie. The smaller 40mm air hose from the passenger footwell vent ran just below the back of the glove box over to the passenger side a/c vent. The frunk/ passenger footwell feedthru was no longer needed and was capped inside the frunk.

I rigged my tiny little vents to actually work with the heat, AC or fresh air. They don't blow much if any air on the humans, but they do blow air onto the windows to help defog the windows. If you drive for very long in rainy days, they are great.
Or of it is really cold and the heat is on, it will help keep the windows from frosting up. When it is 17 degrees, the wonderful heaters of the 911 are great. ![]() Even more so when an inch of snow falls. The roads were clear, but my car was kinds frosty.

Hi Romster,
I had the same plug in my 1978 911SC. Mine also broke apart when I pulled it off. Not sure why it would come blocked off if it is supposed to provide ventilation to the small dash vent. Does your car have factory air conditioning? |

Hey. Yes, it does have factory air conditioning. Do you think that has something to do with it? I'll see if I can find anything about it.

I do not have factory ac on 77.
Seems the control boxes should all have the smaller outlet at the top of the plenum rather than having separate ones based on options. You might want to feel back there to see if it’s capped too, or use a small mirror. Mine has the flex hose band clamped at the top, so the flange should be quite obvious. I’m not sure w/o referencing a PET if or how much these control units vary for the G-Body 1985-89. Perhaps it’s the theory is that factory ac cars do their own dehumidifying when system is operating, there’s was no need to send chilled air to the side windows? Even though the little dash vent have louvres to block off air flow, it still probably weakens the air flow of the otherwise dismal factory ac performance. Since I don’t have factory ac, heat is vented thru that hose to aid in defogging albeit minimally in the colder months. As for the heat they deliver, the little blower force is better than none. If the plenum still has the flange you could simply reattach a new flex hose, it can still provide heat or additional warm air flow in conjunction with the center hvac slider control moved to the right side/upper (arrow) position. My owners manual states the center dash vents are for Fresh Air or Air Conditioning only (no warmt air come thru these). So again, the side window dash vents are trivial with ac optioned cars. I know on my other cars, directing chilled air to the windows via side vent causes them to fog up a bit as cold meets warm surface on very humid days. |

On my 85, the heat is turned on wit the levers of course, and the footwell blowers and engine compartment blowers combine to make a LOT of heat blowing in the cabin. And my car those puny vents are part of the fresh air controls on the dash. Put the red lever to the right, and it blows heat up on the windshield, and out the puny vents. And yea, it will indeed defog or de-ice the side windows. Turn on the outside mirror heaters, rear window defroster, and the car will be clear in short order.
If you have "backdated" the engine compartment and removed the engine mounted blower, well it will take a lot longer. Even on a long drive on a rainy day, with just the AC on, it will keep the side windows free of fog.
