Targa top - again!

I have a 1984 911 Carrera with a Targa top. The right hand door has always been a difficult fit. When putting the top back and standing back to admire, as you do, It appears that the top is off centre by about 5mm. This could account for some of the noise and fit issues. I have tried to move the front locating pins by loosening and gentle taps but they are not moving. Should they move to give me lateral relocation or are the captive nuts in the targa frame seized? I don't want to disturb the top unnecessarily to loosen fixings that are fixed.
Thanks

Peter... there are several adjustment points in the roof and car that are necessary to all be tuned for our tops to fit optimally. The adjustment I think you are interested in is the top rubber seal that the glass meets up with. Those seals are independent of the roof---it is a strip that adjusts inwards and outwards in order to meet the glass with just the right tension. With the roof on the car, look up underneath that seal and you will see a number of small holes. Those holes provide access to the screws that fasten the seals to the roof. Those screws need to be loosened to move the seal into a good position. This tuning is best done with two people as one can "position" the seal from the inside the cabin while the other is outside looking to see how the glass meets the seal. If doing this solo, it is a trial & error process.

If there is not sufficient adjustment to move the seal where you want it to be, remove the seal entirely and grind out the holes in the seal's metal strip so the seal can move more in the direction needed. These "holes" are where the screws go through the seal. Will make sense when you see this seal strip apart from the roof.

As I recall from rebuilding my roof from the bone up, the front pins (that are fastened to the roof and insert the car when installing the roof) have threaded ends that screw into the roof. Their positions in the roof (the pins) are fixed at the factory.

If you run out of range with the side rubber seals that Discseven is referring to, you can adjust the angle, pitch, and stopping point for the glass behind the door panel/card.
All of these finicky top and window adjustments combined with amount of noise you don't get with a coupe makes me want to drive my targa into a lake and call my insurance agent.

PM your email address and I'll send you the Targa Top Service School Manual.

It may help. It took me a while to get good at it.

Is that the 12-page manual with a green cover?

Mark

I owned a 1991 964 Targa and the pain I endured with the Top was long and painful. Now this car was in great shape. Seals were supple, looked symmetrical to the body, never in an accident, never been apart. Raining in the corners where the top intersects with the corner of the windscreen when I washed the car. Maybe a year later, the raining on the dash pad from the leading edge started. That is when I engaged trying to seriously fix it. I purchased a cover from a guy on the east coast. The leading edge of the new cover was a problem. The doubled over and sewn edge was short. It didn’t make the distance to the metal frame. Understand this is not a rain weather thing, it was just an area where water could collect and have a direct source from above for my waterfall on the dash. I found a guy on the German side of eBay that had one for sale. It was brand new in a box. His Targa purchase from dealership was to include a complete new top. By the time it came in he was already disgusted with his purchase and sold the car and bought a Coupe. The new top fit ok, but still had issues in the two forward corners. I purchase a little known fiberglass panel from a guy who made them and sold them to our host. It was supposed to fit on the uncover frame of the Targa bones. It was a slow process to adapt to the frame and put it on the back burner. Time and 60-70 hour work schedule hampered the project that I was not very enthusiastic about. Decided to just buy a Coupe. I looked for a 964 Coupe and they were scarce. So I settled for a Twin Turbo 996. I knew then why the guy sold his Targa in Germany. I wish that 964 was a Coupe when I purchased. The price of the Targas new was higher than a Coupe. Now it is inverted. That reflects my feeling of Targas. My Targa was great with the Top off, the open air, the wind in my hair, when I had hair…

At the time my local Dealer didn’t have anyone trained on repairs and adjustment of the top and didn’t plan on sending anyone to school. Factory training manuals were non-existent and more likely never heard of. Sorry to vent, this thread conjured up the bad feelings I have for Targas with the top on. Also, they really don’t look as good as a Coupe. The lines are lost to me.

These are my feelings. Sorry for the long winded, technically not valuable post. But I wrote it and blew up to this size and felt I should post to express and dissuade others from buying a Targa. Be warned, it could happen to you.

Again, apologies for Chitting on Targas.

Dan Pectel (carsinc on pelican parts) / https://www.carsincnj.com/targa-tops.html rebuilt my targa top in 2007 and, after following the alignment/adjustment procedures in the books referenced above and installing the proper front seal that Dan's commissioned (the factory seal changed with the introduction of the 964 and causes the top to sit too high up front), it's been almost leak-free (few occasional drips from front edge in heavy rain) and surprisingly quiet. Dan uses an alignment jig during his rebuilds to get the top square and properly aligned to the roof points. Worth considering getting him to rebuild yours if it's having issues.

I solved this issue by just welding a Coupe roof to my Targa I figure it would take me less time than trying to properly adjust the Targa top to stop the noise and leakage issues.

Yes, this car started life as a Targa...
