Help identifying seats

Hi everyone,

I recently got back the 1972 911T Targa I bought just after high school in the summer of 1990. It's been in my family ever since and it came back around to me.

It's in great shape except for the interior, which is going to be my first project. I'm looking to get these re-upholstered and am wondering if it would be better if I bought the seat covers and had a shop put them on.

Also I'm hoping someone can tell me the details of these seats. The original seats the car came with were the buckets with no headrest. My father put in 4-point harnesses and replaced the seats with these (picture attached).

Anyone have any idea? Note the power seat controls (they are wired and work surprisingly enough). I'm guessing these are early 80s.

I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area so if anyone has an upholsterer that does good work (at a reasonable price - ha ha) or other recommendations I'm all ears.

Rather than go through the expense of having incorrect seats reupholstered, you might consider sourcing standard 72 seats or getting reproduction buckets that will fit the period of the car better, have new foam and upholstery. The cost will be comparable.

The seats are '86 on seats, non sport version. this one seems heated, cool feature.
But agree with SAT above, anachronistic in a '72.

I’m gonna disagree with the others. Stock 72 seats, even the headrest version, are just garbage. Buy some nice “sport purposes” aftermarket seats and sell the Carrera seats to help cover the cost.

My father replaced the engine with a 3.0L so it is not all original. The color of the car now is metallic blue but you can see the original poison frog green color in the picture. It will never again be an all-original car, so I'm not necessarily stuck on keeping the seats in the right vintage.

I'm 6'3 and I suspect I can find an aftermarket seat that will give me a bit more headroom, so maybe that's a reason to make a change.

Those seats have a height adjustment feature. If you lower it all the way with the motors, and push it back all the way you should fit just fine. I am only 6 foot tall and if I push my seats all the way back, I can't even get to the pedals. If I tilt the seat back a bit, I can just barley touch the steering wheel. I think the 72 is the same inside as my 85.

I love the factory seats in my 85. I have done many 12+ hour long trips, sometimes two days in a row. They fit me perfectly. And tilt the backrest back just a bit, and it is just perfect.

My problem is mostly headroom - moving the seat back doesn't help. My head kind of bumps up against the headliner of the targa top. If I tilt the seat back then my T-rex arms can't reach the steering wheel very well. I'm considering getting an aftermarket steering wheel with more dish to see if that maybe helps. I was about to buy a Momo that looked pretty good before I saw the cost on the adapter hub and that put it above my "impulse buy" threshold...

The seat rails are different, in height as well between 72 and 85, twice changed I'd say.

I’m the same height with the same issue, even though my ape index is huge. Aftermarket seats will solve your head clearance problem.

FWIW, Recaro L-modular seats will lower your H point a couple of inches or so from SC comfort seats. I imagine the delta from those Carrera seats would be similar.

Cool seats, but they look terribly out of place in a long-hood.

I'd rather have a worn out set of these than a nice set of seats that don't fit the car.

The last worn out set of those I had, I sold for $8,000.

These are great replicas and will cost just a bit more than having yours recovered.

I've had some seat covers on them for a bit now and I'm kind of done with that. I'm ready to have some nice seats again. I've already gone through the drivetrain (and I'm sure I will have to again at some point).

If I go with some replicas that are more long hood appropriate is there any market for my current seats?

For sure. Not sure how much because of the rips, but the cool fabric and heat is not common.

I know a guy who misunderstood and threw his 86+ sport seats in the dumpster because someone said "not much." Not much was relative.

The seats that RSTarga posted are really nice , they sort of look like what Singer would install in their cars, just curious at to what the pricing might be ?
They would definitely look appropriate in a 1972 Porsche.

desert offers many upholstery options if you scroll down from my link. Somewhere around 2k per seat, which is about what you would pay for a good reupholstery.
They are the most accurate reproduction. Stefan's are super nice, but not as accurate.
