911 SC Fuel Tank Leak - Repair or Bin?

Had a "single" pinhole leak.. turned out to be a few more than that after I removed the stone guard.
Surprisingly, the stoneguard was all that was holding the fuel in.

Going to attempt to have the holes welded...
Then which stoneguard to use?

some poor res photos of inside

Failing all this, which tanks are people using nowdays?

Upol gravitex is what I use, Seeing as how upol makes it for wurth and other companies It should all be the same. Shutz gun @60psi at the gun. You’ll probably need 2 bottles to do your tank at $50 a bottle. Stuff has gone up $25 a bottle in last year.

Probably worse rust inside. Then there's that plastic swirl pot that probably won't survive welding heat...try to find a good stock tank, rather than the dansk aftermarket.

Yeah, I was going to ask the same thing - what does the inside look like? In your first photo there were just one or two spots. But now that they are all over the underside, I don't think there is any saving it. Even what looks like good metal with no perforations is going to be thinner than it needs to be. Hit a rock and you might tear it open.

You might also have trouble finding a welder willing to work on a fuel tank because of the potential for gas fumes and an explosion.

If you can't find a good used tank, the newer Dansk seem like they have a full swirl pot with the strainer (they didn't used to have a strainer). Call Pelican and make sure you are not getting old stock without it.

Edit: Sorry, just noticed you are in Australia. You should still be able to get a newer Dansk from a supplier there I would think.

Mark

The later ones supposedly have a swirl pot and filter screen, so be sure to get a later issue. The early ones seem to have particulate matter inside that will seize the fuel pump, in spite of the rinse that dansk recommends. The vent tube is usually the wrong size and you have to mod your hose. That's all.

Has this been confirmed, the swirl pot?

Mike...

https://porscheforum.com.au/topic/8205-fuel-tank-repair-or-replace/

There is mention of a place in Brisbane that works on 911 tanks. Bad news is the post is from 2016. Like the idea that you're willing to have a go at repairing it---I'd do the same provided the insides are in good form. Would tap around entire stripped tank listening to each hit. Dealt with my tank some years ago. Seams were in bad condition. Didn't know more than to paint it at the time. Now I think a POR15 as a base would have been much better. Gravitex top coat.

Well.. I've got a stock '67 tank here. It got replaced with a Dansk tank from our host. Been driving the car all summer with no problems. Old tank has scale issues but no leaks. If you want to weld on a fuel tank fill it with water first, explosion safety. The old tank is not for sale but I might donate it to someone in the PNW if I know where it's going. PM but I don't check it to often.

It was dry here today so we drove it. We get a lot of tourists here. Wife said I touched 70 passing one doing 30 in a 45. Legal pass but a touch over our speed limit. Gotta say that car is fun to drive.

You can be absolutely certain that there's serious corrosion in other areas of the tank. Replace it now and don't spend any effort or money to restore or repair it.

Otherwise I'll laugh at you when you come back here with various running problems, carb/injection problems, fuel pumps going bad prematurely...

Get the picture?

Replace, do not risk a gas leak

I noticed a bit of corrosion on on the perimeter seam of my 74 tank, while doing an overhaul. As i ground off the Schutz, chasing the rust, i rapidly decided to toss the tank.
It wasn't leaking, as you have noticed the Schutz seems to do a pretty good job of holding the gas :-)
The corrosion will damage your pump, plug your filter and potentially clog your fuel injection system and be a ***** to clean out.

Get a new tank.

I opted for the TMP, (Tasker Metal Products) replacement from out fine host. The stock looking in tank filter was a very coarse mesh and a bit open at the bottom, so i cleaned and re-used my old stock screw in filter.

I cleaned the exterior of the new tank, To ensure that the POR-15 paint would stick, then shot a couple of coats of Rhino -Bed Liner on it., being so close to the ground.

I know that the final coat of POR-15 is not correct, but i have faith in its adhesive/protective abilities.

IMHO, saving a few bucks on a tank rehab/replacement decision is not worth the risk.
good luck,
chris

Especially when a new tank is only about $500-600.

See my post above concerning the new Dansk tank with the swirl pot. Just have to make sure you get the new version.

Has Dansk addressed the issues JW mentioned ?

I would go for a used stock as recommended if new is prohibitive.

Yes, there is a new version that has the swirl pot in it.
