Good Grief.. I can't beleive the price...

... of a new ignition coil - nearly £100 with VAT and delivery for a '75 911s - there has to be a cheaper way - please advise - is this coil common to any other model of car? are there suitable aftermarket replacemets (pref avail in the UK)??

Certainly surprised me..

My electronic ignition coil had developed a crack around the high tension tower and was arcing to the low voltage. I was going to replace it until I saw the price. At that point I did a repair job by cutting into the bakelite around the crack and filling it with epoxy. Its working so far.

Use a MSD high vibration coil. they are 40 bucks for jegs.com. I have had mine for about six months and it works perfect.

I just popped in an Accel brand coil which works for cars from about 1970 to 1983. Cost was around $31.00. I had a thread a couple weeks ago titled "Inexpensive coil options" which has the Accel part number in it. You might search under "ignition coil" and you should find it.

Good luck - Jeff

And be sure to peel the silver sticker off the side of the MSD coil for that factory look.

re: ballast resistors

There was an earlier post about MSD coils (a blaster 2?) where someone asked if a ballast resistor was needed - but there was no reply - what is a balast resistor and are they needed with aftermarket coils?

From my experience...LIMITED!...be careful in the coil you choose. Why? Well after one year, $2,000 at 3 very well respected shops trying to "tune" my MFI w/o success and nearly sending my MFI pump in for a rebuild as suggested my car finally died and was diagnosed as the coil. I was at a race track and bought a used Bosch coil for $50.00.

MFI problem solved.
