More alternator questions

I pulled the Marchal 70 amp and took it in. It cannot be rebuilt. Several have suggested rebuilding the Marchal because it is best not to have the VR down by the hot crankcase. But the stator wiring is fried. My options are:

1. Find a rebuildable or rebuilt Marchal. I dont know if this is possible.

2. Buy a rebuilt 70 watt Bosch with internal VR from Pelican ($170).

3. Buy a rebuilt 75 watt Bosch with internal VR from Pelican ($197.50).

4. Buy an new Bosch for $400.

2, 3, and 4 require wiring and air guide changes. Please help! I'm a rookie and I really need input on the best choice, and info if there are other choices (Paris-Rhone, Valeo).

Find another electric shop who will do this. Last I heard, stator wire is not necessarily German and doesn't have to cross the Atlantic.

Sherwood makes a good point, there are differing degrees of competence among auto-electric shops. You need to find a shop capable of fully re-building your alternator, including re-winding the stator (if, indeed it needs re-winding). You may end up paying as much as for a re-build Bosch unit, but you will have a fully rebuilt unit that fits as original and doesn't require any other wiring or air-box modifications. That's what I would do, in fact that is what I did two years ago.

Good luck,

Dear Loren, Jerry, and Sherwood,

Thanks for the advice. Just dropped it off at another shop and they said it would be no problem. They do a lot of marine alternators and apparently many of them are Marchal and Paris-Rhone, especially for the Volvo-Penta diesels. They said it would be ready Tuesday. I'm prayin'.

You can buy rebuilt Porsche alternators from Western Auto or Pep-Boys and they take the core from your old alternator. I have this problem with my 1972 911 Porsche. Since install an A/C system a a good sound equipment in the car I change the alternator to 90A without changing the alternator fan housing. I use a 1984 Porsche Alternator. Nice trick!!!

Air Guide Mod/VR Overheat

Yeah, dito that. I spent hundreds of bucks retrofitting a carrera alternator to my '71, only to have the voltage regulator heat up and SHUT DOWN both at Watkins Glen and at Gingerman this past weekend. I sawed the bottom off the air guide to improve the flow, but as soon as I can, I'm going back to the original factory setup with the VR on the console.

Anybody else experience this problem and fix it?
