Rear Anti-Sway Bar Bushings 1977 911s
I'm having problems finding the parts I need and figure I'd ask the question; while I'm in there - what else?
From the 101 projects book it claims it is a simple job, however several threads found doing a search indicate otherwise. Please provide a link and or part numbers with the suggestions if possible, I'm on a very tight budget. I have no idea how long the one end of the sway bar has been disconnected, but it explains some weird stuff when loaded with large passenger/friends. Drivers side: ![]() Passenger side - still on: ![]() Three bushings a side, is there anything in the middle?

Those 6 (three per side) are it.

Cool, what's the cheapest way to replace them?
I cannot find the cheap stuff, just fancy racing stuff. I need a link.

Pelican should have them. If you can't find them, call or email Pelican.

Thanks for the links Silveresrty911S, and yes I was only looking at Pelican. I might try the local S&G parts store on Tuesday, have to pick up my oil breather hoses on back order anyway. Looks like this is one of the parts to disconnect (along with lower shock connection) when adjusting rear ride height. I think that I will make this yet another all day project for next weekend.

Sway bars should be disconnected when doing corner-balance and alignment if you have adjustable drop links. Since you do not have the adjustable drop links, leave them on. You can replace the sway bar bushings on their own, though. You do not need to mess with the rear suspension just for them.

Thanks for clearing that up Flieger.
Part of my problem looking for parts is that I did not know that sway bar bushings and drop link bushings were not sold as a kit, they are listed separately. I have bought all these bushings from Pelican in the past. My rear sway bar (same style as yours) has a "19" stamped on one of the ends - I assume to indicate 19mm.
Replacing #2 in your pic is a bit of a bugger. I think I headed mine up in boiling water to get it to be a touch more pliable. Tom

Your "3" looks red (and in pretty good shape) - is that optical delusion? If not, it would indicate a polyurethane part, which might be perfectly fine to re-use. The 8mm bolts come off easy, so it might be worth a look-see.

Looks like Pelican only carries the original rubber replacements. Another source carries Poly-Graphite plastic by Weltmeister, which can be squeaky if put on the front of the car, but have not read about squeaks in the rear application I'm looking at. I am going to get this from Pelican though: Steering Column Support Bushing (Nylon material) Pelican Parts - Product Information: PEL-ML-STR One way or another, Pelican still gets my business. ![]()

Tom, I measured mine to be 18mm.
I'm still a bit confused why so many different sway bar diameters for a single "transitional" year.

You sure the Welties will fit your stock bar? The Weltmeister anti-sway bars are a different geometry and attach differently, not using the ball an cup.

I'd use the rubber pieces if you're replacing them.
And stab bar bushings are notorious for squeaking as they get old...

The fact that one side has popped off is an indication that your drop links are buggered up.
All three angles have to be spec-on in order for the drop link to properly function. I can see in the photo that the one that has popped is pretty well 'used up'. I cured my pop-off problem by getting new drop links from our host. (sorry. not cheap). You are correct that getting the #2 to seat in the drop link and the ball socket is a bear. Best to insert it into the link on a work bench, than use a wooden broom handle (about 14 ") to wack the link over the ball, with the suspension loaded - (on the ground) I go through this procedure prior to each track season, and usually order six of your #2s at a time. My rubber ones sqeak and are egg-shaped. I would use polygraphite, not normal polyurethane.

Question1:
In the location where it popped off, should I be able to rotate any of the parts by hand? I did not use a lot of force while the car was up on jacks, but they did not budge at all when I tinkered (tugged and pushed) with the drop links and rear sway bar. Isn't the whole idea that they have some motion/rotation to them if working right? Question-2: Is it safe to reuse the old cotter pin on the lower part of the drop link? Is that a special cotter pin or a garden variety one?

I would not want to re-use a cotter pin after bending it and straining the metal that much. It might snap off when you went to bend it back again.

the bar itself is not going to move/rotate as long as it is attached to the trailing arm on the other side.
the drop link should move freely around the bar with no resistance, the cotter pin is your call - there is little or no lateral force on it (most of the time) that said, what's another .07 (it's not special) for a new one and the peace of mind? Bill K
