911 hood emblem
Wow! $154 for the badge kit on Pelican? That's a big hit. Any other sources on the web?

That does seem high but, with all due respect, isn't it in poor taste to use our host's BBS to find places to buy parts that Pelican sells? I will tell you that if you find a lower price on an identical part, Pelican will match the price. Frankly, if its only a few bucks, I'd rather support the BBS. Lastly, beware of cheap knockoffs versus quality and/or factory original parts.

Agree - I bought a cheepo version and a mounting stud broke within the year. This is not an item that takes much stress - but it still broke when removing it before buffing my hood.

Heh, that's NOTHING. On the UrQuattro, Audi uses special titanium nuts to hold the turbo on to the exhaust manifold, they are also used to hold the downpipe to the exhaust manifold.
Cost per nut: $50 Quantity: 8 Total: $400 Oh, and the studs are $50 each. So that's another $400. Fortunately, you don't need to buy these guys often. But when I rebuilt the motor about ten years ago, I did need to get all new nuts and 4 of the studs. I wasn't happy. Michael |

I took the original and damaged hood emblem off my '71 S and put it away. I bought a new one with the red bars from Pelican in '04. The cost was $35 plus the seal, nuts, tax and shipping. Probably 50 bucks for everything at my door.
Parts are too expensive to keep me interested in the cars. Come get mine. |

There is something strange going on... if you look at any other p-car retailer, the badges are about 50 bucks or less.
Everyone claims to sell real ones.... maybe some are actually counterfeit?

Because of our relationship with Porsche, we made the decision to sell only the Genuine hood crests that are supplied through Porsche's parts distribution network. There are cheaper alternatives. I don't know if these are reproductions or sold clandestinely out the back door of Porsche's supplier. Porsche considers all crests not sold through the Porsche network to be illegitimate and we honor that.
On a related note, Porsche uses a new version of the crest beginning with the 2009 cars. These smooth crests are simpler to manufacture and cost about half as much as the 1965-94 and 1995-2008 versions. ![]() |

Just to followup with what Scott said. Any Porsche crest not sold through the Porsche dealer network is counterfeit. What happens is that the manufacturers of the crests for Porsche also sell them "out the back door" to the aftermarket, which then sells them through various websites. Some of these crests in the aftermarket are manufactured by the same companies that manufacture for Porsche, but some are not. The Porsche crest and name are trademarks of Porsche, and cannot be used, sold, or manufactured without their approval / license.
Think of it this way. Pelican has T-shirts that we have made up and sell on the site with the Pelican logo and graphics on it. Now, if the T-shirt printer that we used decided to take our brand name, images and then manufacture / sell "non-approved" Pelican T-shirts to other vendors, well then we would have a serious problem with that. It's the same thing with these crests - no one but Porsche has the right to manufacture the crest. Complicating the issue is the fact that many of our parts come directly from the Porsche network in Europe, which bypasses the somewhat more expensive network here in the states. Crests and parts from the European network are indeed Genuine, even though they did not come from the US network. It's sometimes very difficult to keep this straight. Pelican is now the largest supplier of parts for Porsche cars outside of the dealer networks, so there is a lot of attention and focus placed upon us by Porsche. It's wise for us to maintain our somewhat friendly relationship with Porsche Cars North America and acknowledge and comply with the items that are of particular importance to them. The Porsche crest is #1 on their list. -Wayne

If its any help a crest from an official porsche dealership in Germany costs 114,83€ thats around 150USD at the current exchange rate. Even here in Germany the price does cause debate among owners. Pelican is not overcharging for a particular but as I see it following Porsche pricing policy as required.
On a lighter note here is a Porsche Owners Club Germany summary on the way the "Wappen" has evolved over the years POCG - Porsche Owners Club Germany |

I've done a bit of research here, and here's what I've learned so far:
- The design of the Porsche hood crest/ badge/ emblem has continued to evolve over time. - The outsourced manufacturer hired by Porsche to produce this unit has changed many times over the years. - One can purchase a "genuine"/ "oem" unit for $30-60. - One can purchase a "genuine"/ "oem" unit for $154. How is that possible? Well, the vagaries and occasional underhanded dealings of employees or manufacturers or vendors have created a scenario in which an absolutely identical unit can be had for far less than that sold by an honorable vendor. Both may be real, although one may be "stolen", one way or another. While the units may in fact be completely the same, from the same factory, made on the same day, by the same hands, one made it's way "out the back door", and one did not. As far as which to buy, given each may be "genuine"/ "oem", that would depend upon your own personal sense of morality. Personally, I choose to support those who invested the R&D on these cars, and their approved vendors, such as PP. CATTMAN

As long as we're on the subject: Who is making the "new" orange bar hood emblem?

I checked the price... $51.20. Here's the copy and paste:
SIC-559-210-20 Orange hood crest with seal & nuts. Fits 1966-1973. $51.20 Item # SIC-559-210-20 Here's the link http://www.********.com/shop/shopexd.asp?id=57015 Insofar as your comments on forums... well, I do purchase here, but as for repro hood crests I prefer to wear originals on my cars. I just don't understand the difference on this particular item on Pelican vs a dealer. regards, Eric Linden elinden at earthlink.net

I think we're talking about two different crests. The one you reference is a cheaper repro of the earlier orange crest - I have one of those and the quality isn't that great. Those are cheaper everywhere.
The $150 +/- crests are the red, genuine Porsche crests for later cars, p/n 901-559-210-20, $143 from your source. Dealer price is also around $150 - a friend hit a deer last fall and had the hood and crest replaced with OEM parts, and that crest was +/- $150 from the dealer.

I'm not sure how much honor plays into it. If they are indeed the identical part, the bottom-line difference is much more money into Porsche's pockets (not Pelican's, or any other vendor's, I'm sure) and out of the consumer's, when they can play up the "official" part angle. Pure capitalism, against which I of course have no objection. But let's call it for what it is - business, in which companies engage for profit, not honor.
