i need some 911 restoration advice

hey every1,
Okay, i am REAL interested in restoring a porsche, or @ least rebuilding it to my specs. I love the look of the 1974 RSR widebody. What would be the best year of 911 would be to put that body on it without requiring a whole lot of modification? Also, im interested in putting a 3.2L engine with the G50 tranny in. I do like the 1974 911S, but im shooting in the dark. I can go with any year of porsche, i just want to know what year would make it easiest on me, laborwise. I'd really appreciate your input on this subject. Also, a goal of mine is 300hp....any way to do that N/A with a 3.2L engine?

-Zach

Why is 300HP your goal? Because it is a round number or because you have ridden in fast cars that had 300 hp? The reason I ask is because a 2300 lb car with 240hp feels alot faster than a 3300 lb car with 300 hp and will slay it on the track where repeated braking and cornering will leave the heavier, higher HP car in the dust?

I believe Colin Chapman said, "To go faster, add LIGHTNESS".

i currently own a 1994 Mazda RX-7 that has 320hp and its weight is in the ballpark of 2800-2900lbs. I dont really know why i like the 300hp figure, but i do see where your coming from. I'm not set on anything right now, just doing my homework to see what works and what doesnt before i get in over my head

300 HP is a good minimum to set for yourself.

That RX-7 sounds like it is probably really fast, but my 73 911 RS look has about 250 hp and weighs 2150lbs. I'll take a light car with good power over a heavy car with very good power....

-Zach

Its not impossible, but it will not be easy and it will be very expensive.

Arg, it will still be expensive and difficult, but the goal of 300 HP or more will much more attainable at more reasonable RPMs.

ok, so turbo is the way to go for me then...any ideas on making it look like a 1974 RSR widebody as well as stuffing in a 3.2l engine and g50 tranny in a 1974 chassis? or would a later year porsche be better suited for the job?

Well, let's see.....you're gonna need front and rear fenders, both bumpers and a whale tail. Also, some very wide wheels and probably suspension work since the wide wheels like stiffer bars. So, it really doesn't matter much what year you get. If you get a '74> later, you don't have to change the hood. There, that made it easier. Any way you cut it, it's about the same amount of work.

Oh, did I mention brakes to stop the huge tires and your 300 hp?

You might want to lean toward modifying a 930. You'll have to upgrade everything to handle those kinda ponies. That's if moneys no object. I think the new Turbos have 410hp.

haha yea, i was considering a 930, but money is an object for me, and i kinda like the idea of modding everything out. Yea 415HP for a 996 turbo, and the butt dyno can account for every one based on a test drive i took

I agree. They already have the wide rear wheel arches, and it shouldn't be too much trouble to get 300 HP out of a 930.
