A new take on 915 P226 synchro hub / dogteeth removal tool

In the process of refreshing my 915 with new 1-2 dogteeth, synchro band and slider I was struggling to find the P226 tool anywhere in Europe. And as a die-hard DIY’er on a low budget, I scratched my head for a solution.

The exhaust pipe-clamp solution used by others, like this one $6 Synchro Hub Removal Tool did not seem a solid solution. Too risky in my eyes.

So, the search went on for something that would fit the grove in the synchro hub perfectly and be able to support the forces required to push the parts apart.

The perfect item was starring in my face from the workbench: THE SNAP-RING. It’s actually manufactured to fit the grove!

Making a tool that that would make use of the snap-ring as the vital part was then straight forward:
2 pieces of angle iron 45x45x5 mm with a length of 200 mm forms the base. The gap between the top of the dog teeth and the underside of the snap-ring is ca. 5.5 mm so the 5 mm dimension is spot on.

The 2 pieces of the angle iron was stich-welded together and a Ø67 mm hole cut in the center.. The diameter of the dog teeth sleeve is 66.7 mm. The welds was cut away, so we have to halves.

2 smaller brackets assemble the tool and I made to clamping brackets with a semi-circular cut-out to clamp the snap-ring down to ensure it don’t shift when loaded in the hydraulic press. That might be overkill, but better safe than sorry.

Note that the snap-ring diameter is 81.7 mm, so I had to make some some release cuts on the sides to allow the snap-ring to fit. Ideally the angle iron should be 46x46 mm.

It works like a charm. The only tricky thing is installing the snap-ring on to the synchro hub without the synchro band in place. But I slid the tool under the snap-ring while installing it. That worked fine.

The snap-ring will obviously not be reused on the gearset.

Dogteeth Removal Tool

Good idea to use the clip ring to hold the dog teeth.
I wanted to remove some 356 transmission dog teeth several years ago and had to have a thick steel plate machined to 356 dimensions as a replica of the P226.
