Pull out the clock and push the vent out from the back. Should just pop out. Unless mine in my '85 is somehow messed up.

I'd be a little more careful than that. You take out the two air deflectors, the pieces that direct the air first. They are held in by a pin on each side of the deflector that goes into the housing and they pivot on them. If you put a small screw driver between the air deflector and the plastic housing and pry it gently on one side, moving that one side of the air deflector toward you. Go slow and be gentle so you don't crack the housing it fits in or the air deflector, they are both very brittle. There is also a small curved washer on one side of air deflector on the pin. Try not to lose them. After you have those out if you look inside the housing on the front top and bottom corners you'll see little tabs that are pressed down into the dash. you can take a small screwdriver and pry up each little tab, don't bend them but get your flat blade under the front edge of each tab and pry it up or down to move the tab out of the dash material, then you can slide the whole housing toward you out of the dash. Go slow as you don't want to crack your dash either.

I got the vent out by levering up the little tabs with a small screwdriver, then pushing from inside the dash (had the clock out). You could probably "pull" the vent out by making a hook-type device from a clothes hanger. I did not remove the louvers.

The tabs are springloaded clips that snap behind the dash pad, so you'll need to hold them in the "released" while pushing. There are two such tabs for my car, I think. Pre-1986 vents may be a little different - they may have 4 tabs.
