Shift Knob Restoration
A guy on the forum named Erik Flesburg use to restore cracked acrylic tops to 901 and 915 shift knobs back in 2010. I don't think he is doing it anymore. Does anyone know of anyone else repairing shift knobs? Does anyone know what procedure he used to repair the cracked acrylic tops?

I inherited my 73T from my uncle. The car sat in his garage with stuff stacked on it from 1980 to 2005. He was a smoker and there was a burn / melted section on the top of the acrylic shift knob. I just kept polishing it until I smoothed it out. Now you can't even tell.

Banned but not out, yet..

The moral to the story kiddies; If you polish the knob long enough, you will be able to smooth it out. But now you can't tell.

Haha. Funny one Bob. No this guy mentioned above was able to inject resin into deep cracks somehow making the sift knob look like new.

Erik no longer does these.
Reproductions that were cheaper than the minimum charge of $75 became available an he found better paying work. The process took 12-14 hours. 75/14 doesn't pay very well. Polish like a rough paint cut may take out light scratches. For heavily scratched knobs WET sanding will be needed. 200 grit 500, 1000, 1500, 2000 grit in progression going back when needed. Finish with buffing compound and rags. you must be mindful of keeping the shape and not creating flat spots. its not easy, some knobs can not be fixed. some can Good luck. I Wonder if the kits for polishing modern clear plastic headlight covers would work for light scratches/dull/faded plastic lenses? I bought a kit that included a drill attachment and 5 pads that worked fairly well on a bmw. About $10 iirc. Worth a shot
For deep cracks I wonder if something like the resin they use for repairing windshield rock damage would work....just thinking outside the box

ISpeed2Day, so Erik didn't inject any kind of resin into the fine deep cracks? before polishing them?

Deep cracks don't polish out so someone must have been injecting these with resin.
