Why is the 915 coupler adjustment so sensitive?

So Why is the 915 coupler adjustment so sensitive?

The shifter itself is not gated, its just a wide open box that only limits travel on the extreme ends. The only critical issue as far as the shift lever is concerned is lining up the 5th gear and reverse lock out tab with the same location on the transmission. the rest of the travel is an open for the most part unrestricted box.

So the coupler and lever are free to move where ever the lever wants to move within the confines of the shift level tower. As long as you don't hit the edge of the shift lever box before the transmission hits the end point the exact location should not matter much.

So if the shifter is up against the corner of the shift tower , with a mm gap so it doesn't hit the edge, and the coupler is turned against the stops for that gear, then why is there any issue with coupler alignment?

Is it really an alignment issue or is it the fact that things move when we go to tighten them?

Does the issue just come down to that fact that it takes 4 hands to do this properly and we only use 2? Do we really just need a couple of fixtures that hold the shift lever in place and holds the coupler in place while we tighten that dam bolt?

Just curious.

It is all due to the shift lever being fairly tall and rotating the shaft from just a little movement.

Just center the forward and back about equal distance in either way. If you don't have a helper, tie the shifter over to extreme left with a bungee cord to the steering wheel, and rotate the coupler to the right as far as it will go with finger pressure, and tighten the set screw. Done.

Take a test drive. Enjoy.

No, it's far more a matter of feel for the individual gearbox and shift linkage.
Considering the shift linkage and the gearbox is good or even overhauled, the correct gea box oil is filled, then the best way to adjust the shift lever / shift linkage is tp go on a tour with some tools for adjustment. The gearbox shifts best when gearbox oil is warmed up. Do not adjust it when gearbox oil is cold! Thsi requires to drive at least 15-20mls, then stop, adjust the linkage at the coupler, test it, tighten it, and go on. Repat this several times on that trip unitil you found the perfect adjustment.
Be careful not to engage two gears at the same time which happens accidentially sometimes.

Here's a detailed description to overhaul the linkage and a short overview on how to adjust:

I have bronze bushings on my SC... No issues at all.
But I have to admit that a single bronze bushing was too narrow and I had to widen it half a millimeter up to mount it...

...and you have to lubricate the bronze bushings occasionally. The plastic ones work dry.

And short shifters make the perfect adjustment harder to nail.
