So they're cheaper than LEDs and don't make your classic look like you shop at pep boys. Yes, they're illegal, but so are LEDs, euro tail light lenses, SSI backdates, and that splash of leaded race gas I toss in there for the fun smells.

They do require relays but you should install those no matter what bulbs you're running.

Apart that they are illegal - unfiortunately this "mod" may work on 911 headlights with glass lenses and reflectors made of metal(steel?) - don't know if there are lenses made out of plastic like those ugly yellow ones - they will melt sooner or later because of doubled heat and light power, also without the relay mod the high beam switch will overheat too then. The cables mostly will also handle the doubled power unless there are contact issues...again: Don't do that!
Make the relay mod, get good and fresh H4 bulbs, check the reflectors and lenses, then you're good to go with H4's. If you still want more light than that, then get good quality and proved LED bulbs from Osram/Sylvania (Nightbreaker LED) or Philips (Ultinon 6000) and not that worthless china made crap! Security is not negotiable!

To confirm what Thomas has said, here is the link to Porsche Classic directly, who have now started selling H4 LED conversion bulbs. They are just rebranded Philipps Ultinon, not sure if they are the older regular or newer Boost version.

I have just received a set of generic Boost lamps, and they have the same required markings as the Porsche ones on them. With the official papers from Porsche I can now legally use them on my H4 equipped car, and they only cost €90 for the pair from Amazon, vs. €200 from Porsche.

My car is currently off the road so I won't have time to test them for a while, but if Porsche themselves have started selling these, and the have been tested and certified in Germany and Europe, I feel fairly confident that they will be a functional upgrade.
