Fatalities at Nurburgring

Saw this on the Rennlist;

http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/174013/192976.html?1056141894

Terribly sad news. It appears these guys met on the list and hooked up for a drive. Reminds me of what a lot of us do.

So, be careful out there, the same thing could easily happen on a BBR or NoVA run, etc.

I plan on getting a fire extinguisher ASAP, if not me myself, then perhaps for *the other guy*

Sobering, to say the least. All track driving is potentially dangerous, (or fast driving anywhere), but the 'ring is the grand-daddy of widow makers, apparently. Very sad.

A very tragic ending to what I'm sure started out as such a promising day.

Stories like that serve as a powerful reminder to me what can happen each time we sit behind the wheel.

Very sad and tragic! Fire in any car is bad news, this makes me want to get a fuel cell and run steel braided lines.

But no matter what you do, fire is always a risk in high speed collisions.

Wow. That thread is sobering.

It'd be a very effective piece of drama, if it weren't about two real people.

When you read something like that, the human instinct is to count all the reasons that the same thing couldn't happen to you. 'I only drive on tracks with safety crews and ambulances.' 'My car has a three-outlet fire suppression system.' 'I'm too cautious a driver to have an off.' Etc.

But the bottom line is that we're always vulnerable. You can die in an instant from a thousand different things that can go wrong when you're driving.

Sobering.

I was taken around the Nordschleife recently by a German DTM driver, at speed in the F1 safety car, and he spent most of the lap pointing out various places where this driver and that driver had disappeared into the woods, gone into the wall, crashed and burned, etc. Very scary, particularly since it was raining. And then, on the longest straight, his cellphone rang. And he answered it.

Wow, that thread really grounds you.

It is painful to read their posts earlier this week... then to read as their friends on the board realize they are gone...

My sympathies to their friends and families.

Unfortunately, Nürburgring is a very dangerous track...there are fatalities there every few weeks...

Yes, apparently fatalities are so frequent there that they are almost commonplace. Every death in the world is someone's son/brother/sister obviously, the point of this to me is how we get to "know" each other on the internet. Heartbreaking. Gutwrenching.

This was a tragic event. My first reaction was "well maybe we should all drive only race-prepared cars (containing fuel cells and roll cages) on the track". That would be an over-reaction based on the history of the 'Ring.

Beep beep is totally correct here in saying that the Nurburgring is dangerous. Long straightaways, big elevation changes, off-camber corners and 140 turns are what make the track so lethal.
I don't believe that they hold any high-level races there any more.

A very good friend of mine crashed at the 'ring last year. Months in the hospital but he is back with us now. Its a dangerous track but life is dangerous.

I parachute for a hobby. Have had three friends die in this sport. All three died driving on the way to the drop zone in separate car accidents. What we do on a daily basis is dangerous but we are used to it so its normally acceptable.

Have been in one fire with a car. Burned from the waist up but only first degree and healed within a few weeks. Have not owned a car since without a fire extingisher onboard. It kinda grows on you...

Sad to hear about these two gents and hope that they did not suffer. Prayers go out to their families and friends...

Joe

PS never had a fire in a car since. Put out three car fires on the road for people who did not have one with them...

That is a brutal thread to read. Its interesting that the Internet has given us a front-row seat to events like this, and has a way of making events even half way 'round the world seem so close to home.

I wish I hadn't read that. Especially if you read the 2 guys involved posts, earlier in the thread. They were looking forward to what should have been a fun day.... Terrible.

was at the ring today, and it is a scary thought to be going laps after reading that thread, but I am glad I did read it. I went to have some fun and enjoy the best track in the world...nothing more than that. I did not even attempt to time my laps, or run with other cars...just did my thing and all turned out fine. Here is a small teaser clip, the full lap will be posted later. www.threepointsix.com/nurburg3.avi

You may look like an absolute tool turning up at a club day in 3 layers of fireproof clothing, but it does have its advantages. But, as Jack said, at the end of the day, freak things like this will happen, even if you do take every safety precaution.

My condolences to the family and friends of these 2 men.

Thanks for sending me that link bro. Very sad but a good reminder to stay within your limits.

If you want to get an idea what the guys in the 360 were dealing with on this curve at the Ring, I have some videos here:

Ring Videos

"S2000 Schwedenkreuz" shows a proper line and prudent speed through this notorious curve.

"911 360 Schwedenkreuz" is from fellow Ringer Alex's site, sorry can't find link now. He get its wrong, but is having a very lucky day.

"MR2 crash Schwedenkreuz" is self explanatory.

This is a VERY dangerous corner. Don't know if the 360 hit oil, blew a tire, or was simply asked to do something it couldn't.

RIP Ringers.

Kurt

Jeeze, I'm all choked up after reading that sad thread. May they rest in peace!

Isn't there an AMAR on this board?
