3.6 Wiring loom - a serious warning.

I had been having a bit of bother with my 3.6 conversion, some electrical wierdness. I understand the engine loom was recalled for incidences of fire and of self starting. Diagnosis made me wonder about a short in the loom......

My engine is 64/05.

Ben, this wiring issue is well-covered in my book, The Used 911 Story, 8th Edition! It's a big problem with very expensive consequences! Thanks for posting!

Porsche Service Action Notification #W301

I believe someone posted about trying to get the recall done on an engine/conversion, so try a search, but I assume a dealer will want the engine in the car with the proper vin#.

Maybe they will supply the part? Do you happen to have the VIN# of the car the engine came from?

Can someone give us a thumb-nail summary of the problem?

Wiring loom is shagged.

As I understand there was a quality issue with looms from a particular factory, it was subject to a recall and replacements are available.

Common early 993 problem. You can get a replacement harness for $100. In an actual 993, it's a recall which the dealer should fix for free.

replacement wiring harness is ~$700. Was covered in my 96 993- but I had to pay for the labor to replace. My harness was as pictured above- really bad.

Love to know where the wires in these harnesses were made.
I've never seen insulation fall apart like that.

Very informative and interesting. Pelican sells it for $99, just enter the part number in the upper left corner, or click here: Pelican Parts - Product Information: OEM-00004320461

Was this only a 993 and not a 964 issue? I have a 1992 964 engine in mine is why I asked.

Ah, very interesting, no, I asked for 993.607.016.14, as per PET, they are shut now, I'll call them back tomorrow.

Thanks. If that pn is $100 I'll do that.

I have just got it out of the car, turns out the damage is only to the wires in the area at the back of the alternator before it passes through the shroud.

Replacing 3 wires and a bit of loom tape and it could be an easy fix.

Softeners from the insulation don't like the heat from the engine. It's fine as long as the engine and fan are running but it gets very hot there once you shut down. Then it cooks the softeners out of the plastic......

Ahh ..... and that sort of service usage wasn't envisioned, known or spec'd by Porsche so the appropriate insulation grade of plastics was used?....more electrical idiocy from Porsche then, if this is your perception of the problem, which then goes beyond simply a faulty piece from a manufacturer.

I think of it as a communication problem. At some point one of the manufacturers has used a wrong-grade wire to build the harness. Happens all the time when you change suppliers.....

OK- this makes no sense to me. Perhaps last year that part number was for a complete harness, and now it is superceded as a repair kit. Would explain the price difference. Not sure what you get with a repair kit @ $100. The complete harness I got last year was just that--a complete replacement harness down to the last plug and fitting.

You get a complete harness with the kit. I just did this with my 993.

Order the harness and you pay $$$. Order the repair kit and you get the harness for 90% less.

It's not isolated to the 993s. The last three 964s that came through the shop for rebuilds all had the same problem. Highlight photos:

Here is a discussion on Rennlist regarding the harness part number.

Engine wiring harness - Rennlist Discussion Forums

Here is the actual document on how to swap it out.
