Shift coupler bushing issues / 3rd set

This is now the third set of “genuine porsche” bushings I have ordered where the hole is oval. Is there a bad run of bushings or am I missing something? I order some aftermarket junk and they come in perfectly round and tight

They're all oval. Parts Klassic sells the round hole ones, if they're in stock. Late 914s used the round hole. FVD probably has them.

I’m pretty sure they are oval so that a certain amount of NVH doesn’t get through the linkage and into the cabin. I fitted a Stomski coupler a couple of years ago and get all sorts of noise coming through now. It’s really noticeable on road trips so I am going back to the original design.

I went with brass bushings for the shift coupler. Much more precise than stock, but no extra noise.

That fit looks way worse than normal even for these oval bushings.

I can’t tell you how many of these couplers I have done over the years and this is the first I’m seeing this. I have never seen a oval or gap like this

As always, what JW said.

The factory bushings has always been like that.

Here's a set I had for years ...

I put these round hole, delrin bushings in my 85 last year. A little more compliant than brass. No slack, but no noticeable NVH either. Very happy with them. —Dave

I learned something today.

NVH stands for Noise, Vibration, Harshness

I had no clue what you guys were referring to above.

Thanks for deciphering the NVH acronym. I had no idea what they stood for until you posted.

Curious if it is corrected by installing it in the coupler…

I tried there was no difference. I really have never noticed a gap/play like this in anyone I’ve done before. I would consider this excessive. I’m not expecting push tight fit, but this seems crazy

When you compress that bushing into the yoke, it will tighten up.

eastbay 04-25-2024 07:22 PM

As everyone has said, factory is sloppy, aftermarket tight.

Schulisco 04-26-2024 01:42 AM

Jim, I do not get what's the matter with the bushings? Why do you replace them? Shifting problems?

I took the aftermarket "round" one and oval'd it out just very slightly, figured Porsche had a reason. It shifts fine.

Getting ready to do the Shift Coupler, and Shift bushings. Does anyone know the pro/con of the following bushings for the Coupler:

Brass, Delrin, Powerflex, or OE/OEM?

mepstein 09-22-2024 11:32 AM

Even better, switch to the Stompski coupler.
