What Stereo Was Original To A 1978 930?

Hi everyone.

I am restoring a 1978 930 for a client. Can anyone tell me what stereo would have come in this car originally, and does anyone have a nice one for sale?

Thank you

Chris @ West Coast Auto Craft

My guess would be the Porsche CR radio. That was very advanced at the time with it's electronic tuning. It seems to be difficult to get and high priced, if it still works, especially the cassette mechanism. That is the radio that came with my all original '79SC:

Actually the picture I posted was the German version of the Porsche CR radio. It has the AR1 traffic channel button and the FM range only goes to 104. Here is the US version without the AR1 button and FM range to 108:

The previous CR Radio looks very nice but the proper one for a '78 930 had flat knobs. Any CR is hard to find but the "Flat Knobs" are extremely difficult. The "Inner-Circle Knobs" for the CR did not appear on the 930 until mid-May '79. I believe there was also a Koln that had a built in microphone and recorder available in '78.

You are right. My '79SC came with the flat knobs on my US Porsche CR radio. There was a version with a microphone for cassette recording, the very similar Blaupunkt Bamberg. But I doubt it was a Porsche option. Probably after-market.

A '78 might have had a Frankfurt or a Bamberg, not a CR.

Bamberg Electronic Radio.

We had several of these in our 911's, and one 930.

These units were indeed state of the art, with great front ends
in the 70's & 80's, however, were plagued with tape transport issues.

Anyone considering this installation should verify 100% cassette performance,
as I'm not aware of any current repair facilities, and parts.

All of ours went to the recycle bins......

The Frankfurt might be your best bet.

Good luck,

Gerry

I fixed an original Alfa Romeo Radio Model 1810 (Blaupunkt) with a cassette. Found the belts and wheels to fix the the cassette and it works fine. Car Radios are a PIA to fix, but cool stuff. The parts are very common and easilly obtainable.

This is the radio that was stock in my 77. Note the red button for the 'record' function:

just happened to come across this .
I accidentally threw my original CR Radio in the garbage during a messy divorce ( exactly like the one above ) .. i so regret doing that every single day ( to be clear i meant accidentally throwing the radio out ) .

If I could find another one i would put it back in and run a secondary one for sound source in the smugglers box using bluetooth to stream. No one plays anything on these devices anymore. Its all streaming form the phone.
