Bad voltage regulator, do I need a complete alt for a 88 911

or can I just replace the voltage regulator. Seems to be over charging batteries. Obviously, the replacement of just the regulator would be cheaper.

A recent book I just checked out (911 buyers guide), said that the alternators life is about 40,000 miles on most 84-89 cars. Might be time for a new one.

Like an engine an alternator has some parts that can last hundreds or thousands of miles, and some that have a limited life time.

A reputable rebuilder could probably rebuild your alternator for a lot cheaper than you could buy another alternator for.

I replaced only the regulator and haven't had a problem sinse. It was a simple job, and seems to me to make sense to try that before spending $$ for an alternator as well. It is possible that there is a lot of life left in the alternator. Isn't overcharging usually a regulator problem?

Yup and most other types of alternator failures usually result in no charging at all.
