Huge POP from intake and then the car dies getting on the freeway

Well I had my first big breakdown in the Canary over the weekend.

I was driving my 1969 Porsche 911T after a couple of months of downtime and I had a very strong smell of gas in the car. It ran fine as all day Saturday, drove 40 miles to the Easy meet in the East Bay and back without a hitch just the smell of gas. I tightened the hose clamps to the charcoal canister but still the smell of gas.

Sunday I took it out for a quick spin and while I was getting on the Freeway and changed into 4th gear I heard a huge POP! from the carburetor intake and the car died leaving me in a very bad spot on the side of the freeway. Cops had to stop traffic and cone my lane off while I called AAA.

I couldn't see any gas leaks or a loose distributor cap etc. I cranked the car over and over and eventually it spluttered into life, it was extremely flooded. The car ran but very badly.

I manage to get it home but it was a rough ride. It would idle just fine but getting off the line was a problem, mid range was ok if I kept it in 3rd but 4th would kill the engine, it was hard to keep it going.

I've had a look around and nothing is jumping out at me. The fuel pump runs and stops when I turned the ignition on so the needle and seats are working. I removed the carbs, the fuel levels in the float bowls look ok and the floats are operating. Accelerator pumps are working as they should.

The distributor cap and rotor looks fine but I will replace them along with the points.

No oil leaks but I will drain the oil and look at the head studs.

Any idea's?

Cheers

-Kav.

A pop through the intake usually means a very lean fuel mixture. The smell of fuel is a leak somewhere, with carbs it may be internal. I'm not too familiar with these carbs but generally a sticking float will cause this kind of problem. Ready to take them apart and rebuild them?
Good luck!
