Windshield wipers keep going off randomly
I have a 1970 911s Targa, and sometimes my wipers just start going off randomly. I've checked the switch for loose wires at the column, even re-soldered some to ensure good connection, but I just can't figure out why it will go off.
Sometimes if I go over a bump they'll turn on. If they're on (not intentionally) and I turn the car off and on again it will not go on, like it resets. Most of the time it behaves, but I don't have wipers on my car now as it's pretty embarrassing driving down the road on a sunny day and the wipers are going. Can anyone help? The 2 relays behind the blower? I think 1970 was single year only, does anyone have experience with this happening? |

It's most likely a grounding issue. Check the grounds behind the front bumper adjacent to the battery and the post in the fronk behind the brake master cylinder.
Also, see if the wiper motor itself is loose. That happened to me once - tightening it down stopped it from having a mind of its own.

We recently had an identical problem with a customer of ours. Car was completely restored and fitted with new wiring. The problem turned out to indeed be in one of the relays (911.615.111.00) and (911.615.112.00). These are indeed only for 1970 and very difficult to obtain. The same behavior could also come from the window wiper handle, this is also a version only used in 1970. (911.613.302.00)
Regards from the Netherlands.

Both relays were replaced for good (rare) used ones. The incorrect ones were sent to us and after opening the aluminum housing it turned out that 1 of the relays was indeed the problem, it did not return properly to its final position and occasionally made contact. We were able to repair it.
