First Carrera, already dinged...need lid
Finally, I have my first Carrera after spending a long time looking. A meteor grey coupe with spoilers, great interior, some scratches, 94k miles and what I hope are some minor mechanical issues.
About three days ago, on my fourth drive, while I was stopped to merge into traffic a Ford pickup rolled into its rear end. The resulting ding in the lid is estimated to cost about $1200 to repair. Lots of labor to remove the factory whale tail to do it right and so forth. I have been thinking about removing the whale tail anyway and wonder how hard it is to find a replacement 86 engine lid and have it painted ? Are there lid sources, new or used, out there ? I have done a search on the parts section and did not find anything that looked appropriate. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks |

Wow, that seems alittle high to me. was there any damage to the rear Quarters? Was the tail itself damaged. I would think you could get that done for at least half that if the only damage was to the lid. as far as sources try calling Parts heaven or L. A. Porsche dismantlers they would probably have a lid if you needed to replace yours.
Also if you keep your original lid, remove the tail yourself and save some labor. Actually, it sounds like it was the other cars fault, so he gets to pay for it anyways. In that case I'd just drop it off and ask when it would be ready.

The cheapest method of fix would be to buy another lid and have it painted to match, then put the lid with tail in the closet in case you ever change your mind or you sell the car. My PO had the tail removed, and now I would love a tail, but can't yet afford one.
Another thing to consider. The tail actually improves cooling and reduces lift in the rear. The factory spent a bunch of time getting the reduction of lift balanced with the front and rear spoilers to keep the high speed balance of the car. If you drive at highway speeds and you ever plan to track your car you may want to keep the tail. If you do decide to sell, let me know, I'll give you $50 to take the bent tail/lid off of your hands. ![]() ![]()

I'm assuming that it was the idiot in the Ford pick-up's fault. I hope he had insurance or at least you had uninsured motorist coverage. If that is the case I would get it fixed properly, ie replaced. Look for a good used lid have them painted at the same time. Depending on what kind of tail you have, it could be worth a pretty penny. If it is factory installed (struts on each side) I would leave it on or at least save it for the next owner. But that just me.

I just had the same thing last summer. I found a guy on this sight and got a great used deck and tail. The total for insurance was about $4000. Find the proper parts and bight the bullet. If not you'll regret it and sell it later anyway. Keep the reputation on Porsche owners in good stead.
