Engine weights
Hey, gang. Anyone know the weights of a '74 2.7 and an '83 3.0? The 3.0 has no cat and, in fact, would be wearing the SSIs from the 2.7 when it goes in. A Pano article suggested the 3.0 would be heavier enough to warrant a change in torsion bars ...

The 3.0 with all cis devices on it and full exhaust weighs in at 438 pounds i'm told.

Below are wts. with citation. I asked Bruce Anderson & Jerry Woods the same T-bar question (but based on a 3.2L engine w/carbs in a '73). BA didn't change from his book. So I'm sure you could go with that.

Let me add some more trivia here -- a lot of the wt. is in the induction and exhaust systems (besides the crank & oil pump). But PAG used CAE for the 964 and esp. the 993 cranks (Aichle's engine book). So... if you put carbs on the engines, and SSI's -- the big engines (3.6L) may not be anywhere nearly as heavy as you might think. I've never weighed or torn down a 3.6L, but if anyone wants to ship me one, I'll get accurate wts. on all the components -- and will also see how well it runs in my '73 after a hotrodding -- at no charge!

So, Bill, as I read the charts (or try to, as it were), it looks like a '75-77 2.7 "S" (which is what my '74 Carrera has, except that '75 had airpumps) is between 441 lbs (Aichle) and 452 (actually weighed), and the '83 Euro 3.0 I'm putting in (930/10) is 419 lbs, w/SSIs & heat but w/o AC WEIGHED, and is also the weight stated by the "Tech Book." Do I have it straight?
Also, is there a way to actually weigh the engine when I get it out, short of taking it somewhere? M. |

I have always put the engine on a set of corner balance scales to get a weight.
The 930/10 will be very similar to my old 930/02 Which was measured at ~419# dry, w/ exhaust, intake, flywheel etc., w/o AC. The spec book also lists that 419# for the 930/10

Or put it in a truck or trailer, go to truck scales (free in Orygun) and eigh full & empty. Correct for whatever gas used if in truck. These scales are inspected regularly and will resolve to the nearest 20 lbs. (in Or.).
