A 911 should have a clock...
...But it doesn't have to be a VDO.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1720794910.jpg Anyone know if this is a real gauge, or just a photoshop/AI-gen? The clock is the good luck charm in an air-cooled 911. I'll never NOT have one in my car! |
Think it’s a real gauge but the small dials are just for looks.
The clock does work though… |
One of the hallmarks of German cars of yore is basic simplicity, free of snazzy. I contemplated on painstakingly changing out all the dismal plastic on gauge faces with real glass (never did) I seen this…

EC900 -- when John Bell repaired my speedometer (odometer gears finally failed), he replaced the original plastic speedo gauge face with a real glass one. Strongly suspect he could do the same with the plastic clock face as well. Makes a big difference on the speedo (imo)

Glass: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1720829753.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1720829753.jpg (Sharing this because the glass lens & knurled bezel makes the clock look slick too!) |
Thanks for those leads.
That curved glass looks great, very clean. I take it the clock glass has a hole for setting the time? I still get a little fogging on the fuel/oil level and at colder times on the temp/pressure plastic covers. Not too bad but enough to detract from an otherwise clean gauge display of the others. Will have to wait for cooler days to attack the source of the fogging - which likely is the small paper/aluminum heater hose that’s askew or broken, or alway some heat escaping from the left flapper keeping warm air on the cooler gauge bodies. A post for another day ! |

The curved glass doesn’t look right on a Porsche.

The clock has the adjustment knob - finished in a soft-touch rubber and with a gold bezel. Not a good photo but what I have on hand: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1720890920.jpg |
Sorry, I’ll say it…those bezels and glass don’t look right.

If this is a later clock from your SC, how does it adjust? I always liked the Heuer logo'd clocks (genuine or not) but adding fake chrono dials in addition to adding fake logos for a company that had nothing to do with the clock felt a bit disingenuous. When I built Project Heavy Metal, for fun, I had a face made (just a vinyl overlay) with the "base model" non-chrono Heuer Carrera watch logo. I thought it was a funny little easter egg but nobody ever got it, as far as I know: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1721570522.jpg |
They have these things called wrist watches... Even phones for the younger crowd. I have one but it runs a tad slow.

Does anyones bezels / lens make a poping noise from time to time when there is a sudden change in temps? My car is a cab and if I park where gauges get sun, Ill get a pop sound from one of them like its expanding too fast. Same in the winter if I have alot of heat through the defrost.
|
Yes they pop and make sounds all the time. A very common thing.
