911 Subwoofer box

Here's a pic of a cool subwoofer box fit to where the armrest for the rear seats used to be. It's made of a sealed MDF frame and contour molded with fiberglass for an 8" sub. Approximately .55 cubic feet. Very sturdy and solid. I can later take it out and put back the armrests; plus rear seats and foot area still completely usable!

Nice!

What kind of element will you use?

I putting in a 10" woofer in mine for the moment, but I build it so I can put it out during some racing.

I'm assuming you are meaning which subwoofer I'm using? If so, I'm using Focal's new 21V2 8" Polyglass sub. It's pretty deep at about 5", but the box has plenty of room for it. BTW, the seats fold down fine.

Well, that's one of the best sub solutions I've seen yet. My biggest complaint about other approaches is that they kill the back seats, which my kids use all the time. Did you make it yourself? How? ........ Want to make me one?!

With a sub next to the ears of your children, it might kill their hearing. For someone who drives the car and never had people in the back, it makes this idea fantastic. If you actually expect to have people in the rear, i'd use the bazooka tube in the front trunk idea.

To clarify: 90 percent of the time I drive by myself (and actually, I only have the radio on about 1/3 of that time; usually I'd rather listen to the car.) I do have a sub, though, that sits on the floor behind the passenger seat, so if both kids need to ride in back (usually they fight over the front seat) I have to pull the sub out. This solution would solve that problem. You are right on about protecting fragile hearing in young ears; it's only the old ears I want to threaten, and I'm not in to thumping anyway, I just want the frequency response.

The enclosures were made by a local shop in Southern California for a reasonable price. Email me for info. As far as "thump" goes, my equalizer, amp settings, and subwoofer choice has given me VERY fast, accurate, and detailed bass. IMO, it isn't overwhelming (I don't thump around the neighborhood) and balances the rest of the sound out nicely.

BTW, isn't it the mid and high frequencies that can damage hearing? Aren't low (<80 hz) frequencies relatively safe for your ears?

Z-box used to make ones like that. an actual solo sub woofer box can be installed in the front a/c compartment, for those with nothing in there.

I was thinking of making a small box to fit over the "hump" in the rear floor area. Something that would let the kids use the rear seats without impacting the footwell too much.

I have a Boston Acoustic 8" subwoofer in hand that only requires 0.3 cu ft. Does the "local shop in Southern California" make this item too?

Since they were able to build the enclosure in such a awkward location, the footwell shouldn't be a problem. They gave me that cheaper alternative, but I didn't want to lose the ability to move the seats back. The only adverse thing about my subs is that they require the removal of the subwoofer from the box for me to unbolt the box from the car for DE's and autocrosses.

Saw a couple of subwoofers placed below the rear seats that look pretty nice. I don't think they impact leg room too much back there. Check out the custom installations for Porsches at www.caraudioinnovations.com.

"solo sub woofer box can be installed in the front a/c compartment"

John W. -- do you mean in the smuggler's box? With a port into the passenger compartment? I'd like more bass but don't want the 30 lb. or so wt. penalty of the Car Audio Innovations box (which is otherwise very nice).

Do you have more info on how to do this? The smuggler's box is already there so it shouldn't take much additional wt. to do this....

subwoofer in 911

The the Car Audio Innovations sub box does not allow you to put your seat all the way back. I am 6 foot and I needed my seat all the way back. I spent 8 hours recutting and refitting the box so I could put my seat all the way back. When I was done it fit great and the sound is super. A set of 8in subs from Car Audio Innovations ( great people) and some big buck Focals in the doors. Big amp under the passenger seat Alpine MP3-CD. My 6 year old and my 12 year old fit in the back. My 16 year old just moves the passenger seat up. My seat is all the way back. The sound is super with the top up or down.

I have a pix but can not figure how to up load it

How does that smugglers box sound and did you fabricate that yourself? I have no a/c and a spare 10" pioneer sub and amp laying around. If you made that yourself can you give me some details on what you used? Looks very nice and I like the fact that it isn't visible and could be quickly/easily removed.

I looked into fitting mine to my '76 like your style, Bell.

My smuggler's box is actually rotated 90º from yours. The orientation doesn't matter to me, but the size of my box is barely half of what yours appears to be. At the moment, I've got mine (in it's custom box) sitting on the floor in front of the passenger. It's messy... I've got to find a better alternative. I might try to build a floor mount box like the CAI unit.

You say that you reduced the volume of your smugglers box from approx. 1.3 cubic feet to 0.7. How did you come up with these numbers? Is 0.7 cubic feet an optimal number for all 10" subs or yours speciffically? And how did you reduce the volume. Did you simply use filler material and stuff it in, or partition off the box into sections? One more question: is the lid you fabricated for the speaker made of plexi glass? Thanks for the help, it is a great idea and the installation looks very professional.
