Hi. Need current info on oil change and filter.

My 85 911 is due for oil change but I have been sick for a few years. Better now. I will order filter from pelican but has the best oil for the car changed. I used Valvoline VR1 oil before. Is that still highly rated and available? Thank you. I’m better now. I have multiple myeloma. Can do car work again.

Welcome back.

VR1 getting harder to find, but still works for our cars.

I find Mobil 1 15w-50 (but not the other weights) to be easy to find and (relatively) cheap. I order it from Walmart, and it arrives on my doorstep in 1-2 days.

Driven, Motul, Brad Penn, Royal Purple, Mobil 1 V-Twin all work as well. I'm sure there are a couple more brands I'm forgetting.

Congrats on turning the corner with MM.

VR1 20/50 is the good stuff. Look for the 5QT jugs at Walmart or Amazon (maybe others) for less than $30.

Just switched to VR-1 (from Swepco) in my new-ish '87. Had read anecdotes here that engine would supposedly run cooler with it. Haven't noticed any difference, even with oil cooler fan manually switched on. I'll confirm gauge calibration and do a follow-up oil analysis.

I'm sorry to hear about your Multiple Myeloma (my mother had it too). Very glad to hear you're better now.

Wonderful that you can work on the car again! Lots of oil discussions on this forum if you need some good bedtime reading. I use VR1 20/50 without any hesitation.

Rural King has the VR1 20W50 for 6.99 quart, usually 5.99 end of March.

Cool

I was going to buy it, but the site says it's not for my '73.

What's the specs on VR1 for zinc and phosphorous?

Mobile1 15/50 are here:
https://www.mobil.com/lubricants/-/media/project/wep/mobil/mobil-row-us-1/pdf/mobil-1-engine-oils-product-guide-sheet--may-2022.pdf

Zinc = 1300 PPM
Phosphorous = 1200 PPM

These 2 are nice to have for the 911 valve train.

EDIT:
Found specs for VR1, slightly better on Phosphorous than M1 but not by much

Interesting! Folks said that synthetic oil should not be used in our old air cooled cars but now Porsche who made our cars recommends it.

Will VR-1 hold up in extreme heat vs Mobil-1, especially in a Turbo

Car runs fantastic with that.

That's part of the reason why I use Mobil 1 in my car, a 930.
