Oil line re-route 911SC w/heat exchangers?

Hey guys and gals

My 1980 Targa underwent an overhaul about 9 months ago. Since I got it back, it hasn’t been driven much. Maybe 300 miles.

The shop decided that the factory oil lines wouldn’t work in conjunction with SSI heat exchangers and that they required a reroute. What they did was this sort of wonky setup where one line runs above the suspension and doesn’t give much room for compression. Today, it predictably failed. Thankfully, basically in my driveway.

I’m sending it back over there to get it done properly, but I need an example of a proper reroute. This doesn’t seem correct.

I should also note that this is factory ride height. I wanted to lower the car to euro height, but was told that it couldn’t be done as it sits. I know there are cars out there with heat exchangers and lowered ride, so I know it can be done. I just need an example or two of how best to do it so I can get them to fix it.

They’re right that you need new oil lines when you get SSIs, but that’s a goofy way to do it. There is an oil line kit available from our host (among others) that gives you all the (correct) parts needed.

A shop did what ?! That oil line looks like it's in contact with the shock absorber.

Who are these guys ?

I don’t mean to ask too much from you, but I did a little hunting on PP and didn’t find anything that clearly said it was for that application. Any chance you can link the kit?

Take a look at the oil line kit from Elephant Racing for SSIs. It’s made for setups like yours and should fix the clearance issues.

Picture Please………

Could you post a picture with the rear tire removed? Is your mechanic a Porsche mechanic? Thanks.

So let's not bash the shop too much. They did an overhaul and it seems the only problem is not with the engine but with the installation of a non-standard device requested by the customer. If it were I, I would buy the new oil lines, give them the new lines, and ask them to install the new oil lines free of charge. Done.

I hear what you’re saying yelcab1, but a professional shop is also there to protect customers against themselves

They have a responsibility that shouldn’t taken lightly

I'm going with Yelcab. I deal with contractors all the time and if you find good ones keep them. Sometimes just suck it up and laugh it off. They will remember and be helpful rather than firing you.

Sure but I bet the owner of whatever these contractors were working on don't share the same sentiment about the botched job which may have caused irreversible damages and additional delays. Do they give you your $$$ back ?

I think you also missed the part where our OP is going back to the same shop.

OP, you said an "overhaul", what else did they work on besides the SSI ? Hopefully, that's all they did because I certainly wouldn't trust the work done.

The shop did quite a bit of work on the car, some of which it looks they did well and other work that I have found was not. It came recommended from my area as a place that worked on air cooled cars.

My factory exhaust was shot. Rather than go with just headers, I wanted the option to preserve the factory heat and went with SSI heat exchangers and an M&K exhaust.

Trouble is that the shop (being in the south) never had installed heat exchangers on a customer vehicle. They had worked with headers, but not HEs and told me so. They tried to put it all together and realized the oil lines wouldn’t work, so they told me that they were going to manufacture something to work. That’s what they came up with.

I wasn’t really happy about it at the time, but the car had been sitting for like 20 years and I just wanted the thing back on the road. I figured there’d be a “round 2” of work that needed done, and that I’d address it then. I haven’t driven it all that much (mostly some highway driving, which accounts for the mileage).

I’m going to give them a shout tomorrow. I’m pretty sure they’ll work with me on it, and I’ll cover the cost of the parts, assuming I know for sure what to order.

My point was the OP was going back to the same shop. I think I have 4 accounts, 'charge', where I've never filled out credit info. Not a small town here but names do mean something.

That's too tight a bend. I use bailing wire to create the curves I want. Straighten it out for the length. My local shop has made a handful for me. On the other hand I like ER too.

Edit - On the other hand you could put a 90 up there

The oil pipe should be between the oil cooler and the heat exchanger, not in front of the exchanger like yours.

Interesting. It looks as though I basically have the same part, but they just installed it in the wrong spot and used too short/sharp of a flex line.

Is that what you're seeing as well?
