LSD chatter

Is it normal to have some LSD chatter (76 Carrera 3.0) when just starting out and turning? I was running Swepco 201 but switched to Kendal 80W-90 w/ LSD additive to see if it would make a difference- it didn't. Do you just need to go easy starting out while turning to minimize it, and otherwise not worry about it? Never experienced this before with an LSD.

I say it's not normal, I have a ZF 40% in my '76 C3 you can feel it pull a bit in slow turns of 90 -180, more the the PMS 40/65 in my 993, but the 993s is set up w/ less preload

Swepco 201

LSD chatter happens, and you'll notice it in slow speed, parking lot turns. You can add one of various additives to quiet it. But I would just ignore it.

When the inner plates wear, oil doesn’t want to penetrate and the plates stick and causes chatter. Updated ZF/Porsche inner plates have radial groves that allow oil to get in, eliminating chatter. That all u can get now and all I use. It requires a rebuild.

Hard to decipher, but it kind of reads like the lsd is a new installation? What brand? Not all LSDs are created equally. For example, if it’s a Giken, there is no escaping the chatter.

Not 100% sure since I've only had the car 2 years. I'm assuming it's the original unit

Thanks to all for the input

Hi Matt,

I have spoken with both Giken and people using the Giken diff and none of them report chatter when the factory setup is not changed and Swepco 210 is used with the diff.

Could you tell us more about your findings ?
