DIY 911 Whaletail Gurney Flap
Really liked the look of my gurney flap on my Nissan Skyline R32 spoiler. The flap is a good looking aggressive add on to most vehicles. Staying true to my outlaw-esque build, i don't see why not! this wont be for everyone. And i understand that. Anyway, i started looking around for gurney flaps for 930's. To no avail. After making some rough drafts on scrap cardboard like a car guy does, ive decided to attempt making my own from scratch.
I am an automotive painter and bodyman by trade so i have the knowledge and resources. Just never done something like this before. Ill keep this thread updated with my progress - all the way to the completed and painted piece. ![]() ![]() Last edited by GBODY_; 10-06-2024 at 07:55 PM.. |

After finishing the sacrifical skeleton of whats to be - i laid my first layers of fiberglass, let it harden, and then gutted the disposable internals to unveil a locust shell-esque of the gurney flap shape.

Getting the piece to mate to the curved edge of the whaletail was no easy feat. I applied a very small amount 3M finishing glaze to the edges and sanded them to bettter suit. The entire thing will need a skim coat and good blocking to kill fiberglass waves and texture. Once this is all said and done, the part will be non invasive only requiring some double sided tape to fasten it to the vehicle.

Did some shaping, and one last glaze coat of resin to assist with filling pin holes. Then laid a pretty heavy layer of finishing glaze. This thick layer will be block sanded almost completely. Hopefully removing waves and texture from fiberglass. So far going in the right direction.

Thats a lot of wing for the back, you better add a substantial splitter at the front to avoid understeer at higher speeds.

A front spoiler is a good idea to pair with a rear spoiler, but assuming that’s the case here I wouldn’t be too worried about the additional flap upsetting the balance of the car. Give it a try and see.
